Founding members Chuck Robertson, Sascha Lazor, Todd Rosenberg, Carter Benson and James Malis started the group in high school but the band's membership has changed frequently since its inception. Drummer Todd Rosenberg left the band in 1999, Benson left the band in 2002, and bassist Mark Iversen left the band in 2006. The current lineup consists of:

The band used to play under the name The Ivy League, but in 1996 they changed their name after signing to the Honest Don's Records label to avoid confusion (and potential litigation) with two prior bands that went by the same moniker. The band's debut album, Quality Soft Core, was released the following year. After the release of the album, the band was signed to Fat Mike's label Fat Wreck Chords, through which the Mad Caddies have since released 4 studio albums, an EP and a live album.

The above lyrics are from Mad Caddies's song Mum's the Word. The song depicts the state of someone who has had too much to drink and as a result, has lost control of their actions and senses. The song starts by stating that when someone has had too much to drink, their perception of the situation tends to be distorted. In this case, it is said that the person may have upset their friends in some way or another. They are then unable to communicate and walk properly, and as a result, they start to feel attracted to someone who is not considered attractive in their normal senses.
The lyrics continue, and it is mentioned how one too many drinks can kill someone's conscience. It can cloud their judgment to such an extent that they become unaware of the things happening around them. Further, it is said that the person might even end up in a sexual encounter with someone they don't recognize in their intoxicated state. The song as a whole points towards the dangers of alcohol and the downsides that come with binge drinking.
