Founding members Chuck Robertson, Sascha Lazor, Todd Rosenberg, Carter Benson and James Malis started the group in high school but the band's membership has changed frequently since its inception. Drummer Todd Rosenberg left the band in 1999, Benson left the band in 2002, and bassist Mark Iversen left the band in 2006. The current lineup consists of:
* Chuck Robertson (lead vocals/rhythm guitar/primary lyricist)
* Sascha Lazor (lead guitar/banjo/primary composer),
* Keith Douglas (trumpet/backing vocals)
* Ed Hernandez (trombone)
* Brian Flenniken (drums/percussion),
* Cris Badham (bass guitar).
The band used to play under the name The Ivy League, but in 1996 they changed their name after signing to the Honest Don's Records label to avoid confusion (and potential litigation) with two prior bands that went by the same moniker. The band's debut album, Quality Soft Core, was released the following year. After the release of the album, the band was signed to Fat Mike's label Fat Wreck Chords, through which the Mad Caddies have since released 4 studio albums, an EP and a live album.

The Gentleman
Mad Caddies Lyrics

Do you really want to see a piece of me that I hide
Something that's hard to find
What's behind your smile
Is it really worth my while
What's beneath your ton-bed skin open up and let me in
Do you really want to feel something that is so unreal
When we go to sleep tonight
I'll have different goals in sight
Tell you what you want to hear
Have another drink my dear
I'm not going to try to hurt you
I'll be honest kind and true
I'll take you out and treat you right
Like a decent man would do
Now I got you in my grasp do not fear my checkered past
Have you now begun to see this diabolic side of me
In your mind I'm always there I guess
You thought I really cared now it's time to say goodbye
You bit the hook
Believed the lie
I'm not going to try to hurt you I'll be honest kind and true
I'll take you out and treat you right like a decent man would do
Gonna modify my behavior to make you think I'm your savior
Now that I'm inside your head
I'm gonna use you
Probably abuse you
Should have listened to what your mom said
I'm not going to try to hurt you
I'll be honest kind and true
I'll take you out and treat you right
Like a decent man would do
Yeah right!
The lyrics to Mad Caddies' song "The Gentleman" tell the story of a deceiving man trying to win over a woman's trust through sweet talk and acts of kindness, but revealing his true intentions of using and possibly abusing her once he has her in his grasp. The lyrics reveal the manipulative tactics of the man, who changes his behavior to charm the woman, and uses her vulnerability and trust to satisfy his own selfish desires.
The first verse questions the woman's perception of the man, asking if she wants to see the hidden side of him that's hard to find. The chorus shows him promising to treat her right and be honest, but the second verse exposes his true motives of manipulation and control, "now that I'm inside your head, I'm gonna use you, probably abuse you." The bridge brings it full circle, with the man again promising to treat her right, but adding a sarcastic "yeah right" at the end, as the listener knows his true intentions.
This song serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of falling for someone's charm, without truly knowing their intentions. It also emphasizes the importance of taking the time to get to know someone and not falling for superficial acts of kindness, without looking deeper into their true character.
