Willow is still one of the greatest movies of all time. One of Val Killer’s greatest roles of all time. An epic magnum opus to this day. And the way he delivered the coup de graus to the bad guy was insanely brutal and legendary.

I don't know! I was born in the 80s but this movie stands out of the bunch. A lot of 80s fantasy flicks seemed very cheesy and cheap even back then (on average, 80 SF holds up much better). Some I did like back then but have grown critical of later on, and some, like Willow, hold up surprisingly well ...for me, at least!

My favorite part of the fight was Mad Martigan using Kael's own sword to run him through. He used the environment to help him, having more energy than Kael and was a quick thinker. The General was just a big brute.

In the book Kael is portrayed as a much more sympathetic character. He is first and foremost a patriot with a long history of service. He doesn't like what Bavmorda is doing but his loyalty is to his oath and country and so carries out his duties. He considers both Airk and Madmartigan worthy opponents. He's not as bloodthirsty as he is shown in the movie.

General Kael was basically the Mountain from Game of Thrones before there was a Mountain from Game of Thrones. It is on this basis that I think Kael will return in zombie form in the Willow sequel to wreak even more bad ass havoc than in the original. Long “live” General Kael!

Being honest if they made Willow now I think it would make Kael more threatening, which is a plus. The dude was a bad ass absolutely, and he went out like a hard ass, getting stabbed once, laughing, a heavy swing into his side, shaking it off, it took the jolt of the weapon inside of him, and then being pulled down onto his own weapon, AND a fall from the bridge to end him.

I think an expanded movie would have just added to his menace beyond "Skull helmet" and the score for him.

I'm torn. Part of what makes him so menacing is that you only hear about what he did and your imagination fills in the rest. Like, showing him destroying Galadoorn would be badges, but would it reduce the impact of when Airk and Madmartigan talk at the crossroads, or Kael's intro? Tough call. I wouldnt mind seeing bits of his humanity like he is portrayed in the book, where he is weary of killing and only obeys Bavmorda because if he doesn't she will destroy him.

Airk is played by Gavan O'Herlihy, son of Irish actor Dan O'Herlihy. Gavan may be best "remembered" as basketball shooting older brother "Chuck" on "Happy Days" who went MIA after the 1st or 2nd season. His character was just eliminated with no explanation. I like to think that Gavan's TV brother, Ron Howard, cast him in this part as a way to make-up for his being so unceremoniously canceled off of "Happy Days." Gavan passed away in 2021 at age 70.

Ogle Fire I haven't seen this film since a kid. Were all the queens soldiers retreating BECAUSE their general had been killed in battle which often destroyed morale in historical sword fights. Or it just a coincidence and they were losing anyway? It kind of reminded me of when the imperial troops see Darth Vader dying and still choose to just abandon him and run away

If you notice, Kael doesn’t have his own sword at the beginning of this clip, which mean Airk disarmed him at some point in their fight. Also Airk had a shield at the start and doesn’t in this clip. I would have loved to see more of Kael and Airk’s fight, because it must have been pretty epic.

The actor that played Eric was a cast member of Happy Days with Howard...but Khael was is just about every Lucas film since Raiders. He even played in Temple of Doom twice. Ok once as a Japanese gong man and as the Cult guard that Indy shoves into the grinder. In Crusade he was the big guy that tried to stop the Zeppelin. They had initially filmed a fight scene with him and Harrison but Spielberg cut it and just kept him walking to the airfield.

After I saw this as a kid in the theater, in the 1980s I forever adored Val Kilmer, who went on to play Jim Morrison and Doc Holliday. Easily one of the greatest actors of all time; up there with Keanu Reeves and Robert Downy Junior. What I liked most about this battle is that they don't fight like most Hollywood actors who are supposed to be fighting for hours and barely have broken a sweat or look like they could fight for another 3 days and barely break a sweat. These soldiers look TIRED, they are wet and they are loosing steam. Kael especially looks like he's been fighting all night and he's just worn out.

I also like the call back to earlier in the movie when Madmartigan says to Eric "Give me a sword, I'll win this war for you." And "I'll be alive long after you're dead." And Eric, right before he dies, gives Martigan a sword and tells him to "win this war for me." Even though Kael breaks the sword, Martigan keeps it and even uses it to kill Kael.

I think the movie needed to be a bit longer to make Kael more of a threat, and it could have also played up Bavmorda favoring Kael over her daughter to add a little bit more to Sorsha switching sides. The reason is still the same, but I think it would have added menace, and made it seem more than just sweet words. but someone who seemed to genuinely value Sorsha, and wasn't afraid of her or her mother.

@DwarfyDoodad Interesting ideas. The movie is already too long, but they could have cut down other scenes. Sorsha was underwritten, both she and Kael could have used more scenes.

They should've made it longer they don't show much of the Gallidor army they should have extended the movie for more battles they should have shown other kingdoms what did the Castle of galladorn looked like or whatever still I wish that they'd actually made a 3 or 6 movie trilogy so they'd play all of there characters story's giving Kael shorsha madmartigon Erik the kingdoms the Evil Queen battles its much but still

I always thought Willow's battle scenes were actually pretty brutal for a family movie, lol. Probably why they got overlooked - written off as a family film, but actually had really good battle scenes.

Boba Fett: Looked awesome, gets taken out in a comedic fashion by a blind man with a stick ala 3 Stooges, retconned into being some sort of invincible ultra badass bounty hunter and the most dangerous man to have ever lived...even though he really doesn't deserve it.

General Kael: Looked awesome, gets taken out only after being slashed across the face, stabbed 3 times in the stomach, and thrown off a 30 foot tower ledge. Pretty much completely forgotten about. There's no justice in the world sometimes.

Both of my most two favorite characters General Kale and Madmartigon the reckless cunning warrior and the vicious beast of the evil queens army collided in a somewhat mighty battel I wish it showed more of them fighting I thought that it was to short still I love this movie!

There was a trilogy of novels put together by Chris Claremont back in the day...

... I do not recommend them. They were serviceable as books, but it was very much like they wanted to write something different and just kinda tied it to Willow for ... reasons.

At 2:43, you could tell that the death of General Kael caused the Nockmaar forces to rout. Nothing more demoralizing for an army than to see their leader die in disgrace.

Airk was kind of a dick, but it said something about him that, even though Kael had just stabbed him through the stomach and he knew he was dying, Airk summoned up the last of his strength and spat in his enemy's face. Pretty badass.
