One Tin Soldier
Mad Parade Lyrics

That was written long ago
Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley far below
On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone
And the valley people swore
So go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
But on the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away
So the people from the valley
Sent a message up the hill
Asking for the buried treasure
Tons of gold for which they'd kill
Came an answer from the kingdom
"with our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain
All the riches buried there."
Now the valley cried with anger
"Mount your horses, draw your swords"
And they killed the mountain people
So they won their just reward
Now they stood beside the treasure
On the mountain, dark and red
Turned the stone and looked beneath it
"Peace on earth" was all it said
So go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
But on the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away
So go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
But on the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away
Mad Parade's song One Tin Soldier tells a story of two neighboring communities, one living on a mountain and the other in a valley far below. The mountain dwellers possess a treasure buried deep beneath their land, which the valley people long to have for their own. The mountain people offer to share the riches with their valley counterparts but get killed in unexpected retaliation from the seemingly friendly valley community. In the end, after much bloodshed, the valley people uncover the treasure only to find a message that simply reads "peace on earth."
The song's lyrics are an indictment of human greed and the folly of wars fought over resources. The kingdom on the mountain represents the privileged few with access to abundant resources, and the valley people represent the less fortunate who must fight to survive. The lyrics speak of how easy it is for humans to hate their neighbors and justify their greed and cruelty in the name of religion or other higher ideals. However, such actions will not lead to any rewards in the end.

Pay attention to this tale
That was written long ago
It happened a while back
Bout a kingdom on a mountain
There was a land on a high peak
And the valley far below
There was a land in a low area
On the mountain was a treasure
There was a valuable item on the peak
Buried deep beneath the stone
It was concealed under a rock
And the valley people swore
The people living down wanted it badly
They'd have it for their very own
They wanted to claim it as their property
So go ahead and hate your neighbor
It is fine if you despise your fellow man
Go ahead and cheat a friend
It is acceptable if you deceive your pal
Do it in the name of heaven
Justify your actions with religion
You can justify it in the end
It's okay if it works for your own benefit
There won't be any trumpets blowing
No fanfare will follow
Come the judgment day
On the day of reckoning
But on the bloody morning after
The morning of bloodshed
One tin soldier rides away
A single warrior will depart
So the people from the valley
The inhabitants of the lowland
Sent a message up the hill
They sent a missive to the surface above
Asking for the buried treasure
Requesting the item hidden underneath
Tons of gold for which they'd kill
Wealth they desired enough to slay for
Came an answer from the kingdom
The highland replied to their request
"with our brothers we will share
"We'll be generous, we'll unite
All the secrets of our mountain
We'll reveal our peak's mysteries
All the riches buried there."
Our wealth shall be yours as well."
Now the valley cried with anger
The flatland lamented with fury
"Mount your horses, draw your swords"
Prepare to ride and draw weapons"
And they killed the mountain people
Then they murdered the highland people
So they won their just reward
The lowlanders believed they got what they deserved
Now they stood beside the treasure
They reached the item they coveted
On the mountain, dark and red
The peak looked dismal and sanguine
Turned the stone and looked beneath it
They unveiled the object with curiosity
"Peace on earth" was all it said
"May harmony prevail on this planet" was inscribed
There won't be any trumpets blowing
No fanfare will follow
Come the judgment day
On the day of reckoning
But on the bloody morning after
The morning of bloodshed
One tin soldier rides away
A single warrior will depart
So go ahead and hate your neighbor
It is fine if you despise your fellow man
Go ahead and cheat a friend
It is acceptable if you deceive your pal
Do it in the name of heaven
Justify your actions with religion
You can justify it in the end
It's okay if it works for your own benefit
There won't be any trumpets blowing
No fanfare will follow
Come the judgment day
On the day of reckoning
But on the bloody morning after
The morning of bloodshed
One tin soldier rides away
A single warrior will depart

I did the Bass line for the original version of this in my H.S. Choir my Senior year (2001). This version is sooooo much better (respect to the original for without it we wouldn't have this version). Rock makes everything better.
