Crazy
Madeleine Peyroux Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Crazy
I'm crazy for feeling so lonely
I'm crazy
Crazy for feeling so blue

And you
You love me as long as you want it
And then someday
You'll leave me for somebody more

Worry, why do I let myself worry?
Wondering, what in the world could I do?

Crazy
For thinking that my love could hold you
I'm crazy for trying
Crazy for crying
And I'm crazy for loving you

Crazy
For thinking that my love could hold you
I'm crazy for trying

Crazy for crying
And then crazy for loving you

Overall Meaning

In "Crazy," Madeleine Peyroux offers a slow and melancholic rendition of the country classic, originally recorded by Patsy Cline. The song is about an unrequited love that is causing the singer a lot of pain and emotional turmoil. She is fully aware that her love interest does not reciprocate her feelings in the same way, but her heart just can't seem to let go.

The first verse serves as an introduction, with the singer admitting that she's feeling incredibly lonely and blue. She is fully aware of how irrational this feeling is, but she can't seem to shake it off. In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that her lover does care for her, but only for as long as it suits him, and that at some point, he will leave her for someone else. Despite this knowledge and despite being fully cognizant of her dire state of affairs, she can't help but feel crazy for continuing to love him.

The chorus is an agonizing repetition of the same verse, which serves to emphasize the extent of her pain and despair. In the final verse, the singer muses about the reasons why she's allowing herself to worry and feel miserable. She knows that there is nothing she can do if her love interest doesn't want to be with her, yet she can't help but continue to imagine all sorts of scenarios where he might change his mind.
