Peyroux started singing at the age of fifteen, when she discovered street musicians in the Latin Quarter in Paris. She joined a group called the Riverboat Shufflers, first passing round the hat, and then singing. At sixteen she joined the The Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band, spending two years touring Europe performing songs by the likes of Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and others, which provided the basis for her first album, Dreamland.
Dreamland was released in 1996, and gained widespread attention. Time called it "the most exciting, involving vocal performance by a new singer this year". Dreamland, is a brilliant recording, as Peyroux's distinctive voice is not hindered by overly intricate arrangements. Most of the accompaniment on the record is light and sparse, the way it should be for a singer with such a unique voice. Peyroux soon found herself opening for Sarah McLachlan and Cesária Évora, and made appearances at jazz festivals and on the Lilith Fair tour.
In May 2002 she joined multi-instrumentalist William Galison, and together they appeared at such venues as the Bottom Line, Joe's Pub, and the Tin Angel. In 2003 the duo released a seven-song EP entitled Got You on My Mind, which they sold at shows and online. Got You on My Mind was re-released by William Galison in August 2004; the original EP was expanded by the addition of four tracks by Gallison.
Peyroux released her own sophomore effort, Careless Love, in September 2004. The album received generally positive reviews.
Her new album, Half the Perfect World, was released on September 12, 2006. She collaborated with several artists, including Jesse Harris, Walter Becker, Larry Klein (who also produced the album), and K.d. lang, with whom Peyroux duets on a cover of the Joni Mitchell song, "River".
On July 12, 2007, she was awarded Best International Jazz Artist at the BBC Jazz Awards.
Love And Treachery
Madeleine Peyroux Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They remind me of hustlers, confidence men, and you
My hands are warm beneath them, and easy on the wheel
Without your love and treachery the calm is all I feel
I shiver in the mirror, pull my belt across my hips
The leather's hard in bending as your fingers to my lips
I wrap it tightly in defense as if your arms were near
I'll take a glass of wine and recall the words you spoke
From the bottom of your cup, covered in spit and smoke
But in your voice I'll hear my own and recognize the crime
That all your love and treachery has ended up as mine
I see you in the rear view with just a passing glance
How your eyes shine, as if through mine, you'd see and understand
As if we'd played each other but never knew the score
And all was love and treachery but isn't anymore
That all was love and treachery but isn't anymore.
The lyrics to Madeleine Peyroux's song Love and Treachery speak to the conflicting emotions and memories of a past relationship. From the outset, the song sets a mood of nostalgia and anticipation, with the singer putting on their gloves and hitting the road to San Berdu. The gloves serve as a reminder of past experiences with "hustlers" and "confidence men" (perhaps indicative of the manipulative nature of the singer's former lover), and ultimately of their past relationship itself. The singer is simultaneously heartened and troubled by the memories the gloves evoke, feeling warmth in their hands but also a sense of unease.
As the song progresses, the singer reflects on their relationship through a series of vivid images. They shiver as they pull their belt across their hips, recalling the sensation of their former lover's fingers on their lips. They wrap themselves in their belt, as if for protection from some unknown force - perhaps the memory of their past relationship. The singer seeks solace in a glass of wine, recalling the words their former lover spoke "from the bottom of [their] cup, covered in spit and smoke." Despite the grime and discomfort of the memory, the singer can hear their own voice echoed in their former lover's words, and recognizes the "crime" of their own complicity in the relationship.
