Baggy Trousers
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Naughty boys in nasty schools
Headmaster's breaking all the rules
Having fun and playing fools
Smashing up the woodwork tools
All the teachers in the pub
Passing 'round the ready-rub
Trying not to think of when
The lunchtime bell will ring again

Oh, what fun we had
But did it really turn out bad
All I learnt at school
Was how to bend, not break the rules
Oh, what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
Trying different ways
To make a difference to

The headmaster's had enough today
All the kids have gone away
Gone to fight with next door's school
Every term, that is the rule
Sits alone and bends his cane
Same old backsides again
All the small ones tell tall tales
Walking home and squashing snails

Oh, what fun we had
But did it really turn out bad
All I learnt at school
Was how to bend, not break the rules
Oh, what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
Trying different ways
To make a difference to the days

Lots of girls and lots of boys
Lots of smells and lots of noise
Playing football in the park
Kicking pushbikes after dark
Baggy trousers, dirty shirt
Pulling hair and eating dirt
Teacher comes to break it up
Back of the 'ead with a plastic cup

Oh, what fun we had
But did it really turn out bad
All I learnt at school
Was how to bend, not break the rules
Oh, what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
Trying different ways
To make a difference to the days

Baggy trousers, baggy trousers, baggy trousers
Baggy trousers, baggy trousers, baggy trousers
Baggy trousers, baggy trousers, baggy trousers

Baggy trousers, baggy trousers, baggy trousers
Baggy trousers, baggy trousers, baggy trousers

Overall Meaning

The song "Baggy Trousers" by Madness describes the mischievous behavior of a group of schoolboys at a strict school. The first verse vividly portrays the boys' gleeful and reckless behavior, in which they smash up the woodwork tools, while the teachers try to forget about the upcoming lunchtime bell. The second verse depicts the headmaster's frustration with the children's rebellious behavior and the fights that occur frequently between schools. In both cases, the song contrasts fun and playfulness with the strict, rule-abiding atmosphere of the school.

The chorus of the song, "Oh, what fun we had, but did it really turn out bad? All I learnt at school was how to bend, not break the rules," reflects on the fun moments the boys had, but also questions the lessons learned from attending the school. The song suggests that the school system was not effective in promoting critical thinking and creativity, but instead focused on discipline and obedience to authority.

Overall, "Baggy Trousers" is an anthem for youth rebellion against conformity and authority, and a reminder of the importance of questioning, experimentation, and playfulness in learning.

Fun fact: during the filming of the music video, the saxophonist had to be reminded several times about the laws of physics but he kept forgetting. So the producers had to leave it in because each shoot was so expensive

@hatednyc

You never actually said what he did that was wrong and had to be left in. Fun fact, he’s already defying the laws of physics by FLYING. What worse could’ve had done?!

@@hatednyc Do you ever get the feeling you have missed something painfully obvious?
