Gabriel's Horn
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hate is a word that I hate
I've made a mistake
The temple is having a sale
How can we fail

Love is a woman I need
Life moves
Man can you tell me please
What was your face
What was your face
What was your face before you were born?

I will say that there's blood on my hands
I'm a man I'm a man I'm a man
I will ask my God to forgive
If I can if I can if I can

I will go with the way that is soft
Give you all that I have got
Keep you close to my heart
Not let anything tear us apart
I need to look into your soul
No matter what you say
Now don't turn away

Last time I was with you
I felt we were miles apart

Don't be angry with me baby
I'll be sorry when you're gone
Listen up I know it's crazy
I've tried to be as honest as I can
I hope I didn't get it all wrong
I'll be naked in the flame
I have no mind to hide my shame
Move me close and kiss me quick
Hold my hand I'm feeling sick

Is this wall up between us for life?
You could die on the inside
To never be heard of again
It's too late on your last breath

Hate is a word that I hate
I've made a mistake
The temple is having a sale
Gabriel come down
Gabriel come down
Gabriel come down from above

Last time I was with you
I felt we were miles apart

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Gabriel's Horn" by Madness critique the destructive nature of hate by remarking on the paradoxical use of the word itself. However, the singer also acknowledges their fallibility and that they have erred despite their understanding that hate is wrong. These lines serve as a motif throughout the song, which urges the listener to focus on love rather than hate, and the importance of companionship, understanding, and forgiveness. The gospel-like chorus proclaims, "The temple is having a sale, how can we fail? Gabriel come down from above," which could be interpreted as a plea for divine guidance and salvation.

The song seems to be exploring the conflict between love and fear, acceptance and rejection, and ultimately accepting oneself in order to find peace. The lyrics "I will say that there's blood on my hands, I'm a man I'm a man I'm a man, I will ask my God to forgive, if I can if I can if I can" embody this theme. The singer acknowledges the damage that they have caused while also attempting to make amends and seek forgiveness. The song seems to be a plea for redemption and a willingness to put down one's guard and connect, even if it entails humility and vulnerability.

I love this tune. It's so well made. Hook layered upon hook upon hook. Brilliant stuff. (Just when you think it can't get any better, it does.)

The late 80s and early 90s were strange days when the public had maybe taken Madness for granted and stopped appreciating them. Even Paul Weller at that time was playing small University and Polytechnic gigs which seems hard to believe now. It's a shame because Madness/The Madness were writing some great stuff - some of which didn't get released.

I know there was a bit of a Mess around this time with the Band but Despite no real Success on the Charts & being Critically Written off I think this is a Gem of an Album!,
with this & at least another half a Dozen Great Tracks, Great Art Work & a list of Who's Who helping out on the Album.
