Grey Day /
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I get home it's late at night,
I'm black and bloody from my life,
I haven't time to clean my hands,
Cuts will only sting me through my dreams.

It's well past midnight as I lie
In a semi-conscious state.
I dream of people fighting me
Without any reason I can see.

In the morning I awake,
My arms my legs my body aches,
The sky outside is wet and grey
So begins another weary day.
So begins another weary day.

After eating I go out,
People passing by me shout.
I can't stand this agony
Why don't they talk to me?

In the park I have to rest
I lie down and I do my best,
The rain is falling on my face
I wish I could sink without a trace.

In the morning I awake,
My arms my legs my body aches,
The sky outside is wet and grey,
So begins another weary day.
So begins another weary day.

In the park I have to rest
I lie down and I do my best,
The rain is falling on my face
I wish I could sink without a trace.

In the morning I awake,
My arms my legs my body aches,
The sky outside is wet and grey,

So begins another weary day.
So begins another weary day.

Overall Meaning

Grey Day by Madness is a song filled with poignant lyrics that paint a vivid picture of a person's struggles and difficulties in life. The song is a reflection of the hardships and miseries that he endures every day. The opening lyrics, "When I get home it's late at night, I'm black and bloody from my life, I haven't time to clean my hands, cuts will only sting me through my dreams" speaks of a physically tiresome and emotionally draining lifestyle. It implies that the person has probably gone through a tough workday or faced violence, leading to cuts and bruises.

The song continues with the singer having nightmares about people fighting against him without any valid reason. This is a reflection of the person's mental trauma, stress, and anxiety levels. In the morning, the person awakens with aches in his arms, legs, and body. The gloomy weather adds to the atmosphere of hopelessness that pervades the song. The lyrics indicate that the person has no hope, feels isolated, and is virtually invisible to the world.

The song concludes with the singer lying in the park, wishing to sink without a trace. The repeating chorus of "So begins another weary day" reflects the person's trapped and hopeless existence. The song conveys an atmosphere of despair, giving the listener a view of the life of someone trapped in a cycle of misery and weariness.

Very talented songwriters and performers who spoke to a generation. We didn't realise how lucky we were in the late 70's and early 80's to have so many great bands around at the same time..... the specials, the beat and the jam, to mention just three. Nutty boys forever!

RIP Tim Gough. Last song he ever played. Imagine dying to this…. (Had to edit weeks later. Never heard of this song until this poor man passed away on the air. A man I never heard of, thousands of miles an an ocean away, dies on air and still manages to introduce great music to people everywhere!)

These guys deserve a lifetime achievement award, so much better than the crap about today.
