I Pronounce You
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, there's a feeling in your stomach, a light trembling at the knees
Not even knowing who the lucky fellow might be
Bridesmaids are cleaning the court-house bell
Horse-driven carriages wait patiently in hell

Happiness has been arranged for some time in July
Invitations have been sent I'm so bitter I could cry
Congratulations flown in from a long-lost friend
For the big occasion regretting that he can't attend

And as family tradition is busy making up your mind
Gallantly standing draped in his holy shroud
God's representative mumbles to a tearful crowd

I now pronounce you
I now pronounce you

Mother father wake up, you've overlooked one thing
The daughter you've planned for four years won't get to wear your ring
Instead she'll be running off into the dark of night
Straight into the hungry arms that long to hold her tight

And as family tradition is busy making up your mind
Gallantly standing draped in his holy shroud
God's representative mumbles to a tearful crowd

I now pronounce you
I now pronounce you

There's a feeling deep inside of you, a feeling that of ease
You're the sweetest thing that could ever happen for me
The bridesmaids are ringing the court-house bell
Horse-driven carriages try to cover streets to tell

And as family tradition is busy making up your mind
Gallantly standing draped in his holy shroud
God's representative mumbles to a tearful crowd

I now pronounce you

I now pronounce you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Madness's song "You" depict the feelings of a woman who is about to get married to someone she doesn't love. The opening lines describe the physical sensations that she experiences - a feeling of unease in her stomach and trembling knees. This suggests that she is not happy about the upcoming nuptials. The song goes on to describe the wedding arrangements, including the horse-drawn carriages and bridesmaids ringing the bell. The mention of hell and a tearful crowd implies that things are not as happy as they seem.

The lyrics go on to suggest that the woman is being pressured by family tradition to go through with the wedding. The priest is described as "God's representative" but is shown to be mumbled as the crowd is tearful. The woman's parents have planned the wedding for four years, but they have overlooked one thing. The daughter they have planned for won't get to wear their ring, and instead will run off into the dark of night to the arms of someone who loves her deeply.

Despite the darkness in the song's premise, the final verse describes a feeling of peace and happiness that comes from being with the person you love. The imagery of horse-drawn carriages trying to cover the streets suggests that this couple is breaking with tradition and doing what makes them happy, rather than what society expects of them. Overall, the song tells a heartbreaking story of a woman who is trapped in a loveless marriage but finds hope and happiness in the arms of another.

I can't understand why this song didn't make at least top twenty, it is superb. Fantastic music arrangement. The use of the Indian instrument ( I can never remember what they call it), was a good touch to the song as well. Long live the nutty boys.

DAVID OWEN WINTER

sitar is indian instrument

Stufa Ryde

A beautifully under-rated song.
Bizarrely one of my favourites from Madness.

scotthart2

Well it is really isn't it, I mean it's John Hasler on the drums so you can swap him on the trump cards for Mike on piano and Woody on drums, granted you would lose a shit load of top trumps points but you'd still be in the game, kind of.....haha

Bentley Walker

Strictly speaking it isn't, despite the band acknowledging it as an album that they made under the alias "The Madness"

The PC Guy

Love this song so much, very underrated, deffo one of my faves too

Sam Haynes Music
