Keep Moving
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hurry up, don't slow down
Pick a time, don't let hands pull you down
If you're waiting

Have it up, move along
Say goodbye, don't let words stay too long
If you're leaving
It read, we missed you
Between the lines it said
Hold it high with a smile
Speak out loud with the mind of a child
If you're lucky

It read, we missed you
Between the lines it said
Hurry up

We really must be going, there's no time to delay
We have to leave a message because we can't stay
It really is important so remember take care
Please keep on moving 'cause there's nobody there

It read, we missed you
Between the lines it said
We've waited for so long
But now it's time
To keep moving along

Here and there are the signs
On the road give way to stop and go
When you're moving

It read, we missed you between the lines
It said, we've waited for so long
But now it's time
To keep moving along

Keep moving, you've got to keep moving
Keep, keep, you've got to keep moving

Keep moving, you've got to keep moving
Keep, keep, you've got to keep moving

To keep moving along

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Madness's song "Keep Moving" convey a sense of urgency and the need to keep moving forward in life. The opening lines, "Hurry up, don't slow down, pick a time, don't let hands pull you down" suggest that the singer is urging the listener to be proactive and not let life's obstacles hold them back. If you're waiting, the lyrics advise you to "have it up, move along" and not let opportunities pass you by. Similarly, if you're leaving, it's best to "say goodbye, don't let words stay too long" and keep moving forward.

The chorus contains the repetition of the phrase "it read, we missed you, between the lines it said," which suggests that the singer is reading some kind of message or subtext. This message encourages the listener to "hold it high with a smile" and "speak out loud with the mind of a child" which could mean staying positive and embracing a childlike sense of wonder and curiosity.

The bridge takes on a more urgent tone, with the repeated phrase "hurry up" suggesting that the time to act is now. The singer reiterates that they can't stay and must leave a message before urging the listener to "please keep on moving 'cause there's nobody there." The final verse emphasizes the need to continue moving forward, with "here and there are the signs, on the road give way to stop and go, when you're moving." In summary, the song is a call to action to keep moving forward, to not let life hold you back, and to stay positive and curious.

A great song, still is. And a great album. The boys should be proud of it.

Suggs once referred to it as "a polished turd" - personally, it's my favourite Madness record, as in its entirety. It actually works as a whole record, unlike some of griff other output. Cheers!

Zelda Fitzgerald

It was Mad Not Mad he referred to as a polished turd, not Keep Moving

Acha Red

@Zelda Fitzgerald Indeed Suggs said that about MNM . And I don't agree with Suggsy on that. It has lots of good songs on it. Same goes for 'The Madness' album.

Kevin Melling

@Acha Red yes finally got hold of that on Vinyl reissue. Pity it didn't get released with the CDs too a few years ago.

One or their best tracks ever recorded, so sad they haven't played it more often live

michel verstraeten

This should've been a single. One of the better tracks they ever made

Mark Martinengo

100% couldn't agree more, great song 👏

Darren Hoggett

I suspect had the band not fell out with Stiff, there may have been further singles as I'm sure more then two were planned. This would have surely been one of them and the other being the 'Victoria Gardens', which infamously was going to be a single until Dave Robinson went for 'One Better Day' - with artwork left in place...

Keep Moving album is such a classic.
