One Step Beyond
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey you, don't watch that, watch this
This is the heavy heavy monster sound
The nuttiest sound around
So if you've come in off the street
And you're beginning to feel the heat
Well, listen buster
You better start to move your feet
To the rockinest, rock-steady beat
Of madness
One step beyond

One step beyond

One step beyond

One step beyond

One step beyond

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Madness's song One Step Beyond are a call to action, compelling the listener to stop what they're doing and pay attention to the wild and crazy sound being offered up. The phrase "Hey you, don't watch that, watch this" is an exhortation to abandon whatever mundane or boring task is occupying the listener's attention, and instead give themselves over to the "heavy heavy monster sound" of the band. The music is being described as "nutty," which implies a sort of irresponsibility or impulsiveness that is exciting and freeing.

The second stanza continues the exhortation, urging the listener to really get into the music and start moving their feet to the "rockinest, rock-steady beat" of Madness. The repetition of the phrase "One step beyond" not only emphasizes the sense of urgency and excitement in the music, but also suggests that the band is pushing the listener beyond their usual limits or boundaries. Taken together, the lyrics of One Step Beyond invite the listener to let go of their inhibitions and get lost in the rhythm of the music, abandoning themselves to the raw energy and wildness of the performance.
