Rise And Fall
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

These are the streets I used to walk
On summer nights, sit out and talk
That's the house where I used to live
I remember what I would give.

This is the town I won't forget
And after anger there's nothing left
Walking now round and round
Familiar sights are open ground.

Being here again
I can recall
Forgotten moments
The rise and fall.

We used to live where children play
They leave their homes a mile away
To come and stand in trees and grass
Where we once walked the memories last.

Being here again
I can recall
Forgotten moments
The rise and fall.

The sun shines east, the sun shines west
But I know where the sun shines best
Casey street in the afternoon
Once again it's over too soon.

Being here again
I can recall
Forgotten moments
The rise and fall.

Being here again
I can recall
Forgotten moments
The rise and fall.

Rise
(Rise)
(Rise)

Rise and fall

Overall Meaning

The song "Rise and Fall" by Madness is a nostalgic and reflective piece about revisiting the singer's childhood hometown. The first stanza sets the scene, as the singer walks through the streets and past his old house, remembering the conversations he used to have and how much he gave to the place. The second stanza reflects on the fleeting nature of emotion and how little is left behind after anger fades away. The chorus repeats the singer's ability to recall forgotten moments, and the rise and fall that accompanies them.

In the third and final stanza, the singer recalls the memories of his childhood that are still alive in the town, even if the physical locations have changed. The final line of the song is particularly poignant, as the singer acknowledges how quickly his return to the town is over, reminiscent of how often in life moments that seem monumental at the time can pass by in the blink of an eye.

Overall, the song is a tribute to the beauty and the pain of the passage of time, and how memories can both sustain and haunt us as we grow and change.

Who is who on the cover?

What I know:
Suggs is in front with the newspaper
Lee is the Soldier

What I’m less confident on:
Barso is looking in the mirror
Bedders is in the hat in the middle
Chrissy Boy is watching TV on the couch

What I’m guessing:
Woody is the preacher
Chas is in Blackface.

Can anybody confirm if I’m correct here?

@Psychol-Snooper

It was the first album I ever bought for myself with my own money. I played it like crackheads hit their pipe.

Definitely the most underrated

@goldersgreen1147

This album came away from ska more pop. Yes probably my favourite but I like most of theirs I find their best was never singles like rise and fall.
New Delhi is brilliant

@glenshea1967

@@Psychol-Snooper same here.first album I bought from my own money.5 pound it cost.A weeks paper round money in 1982 when I was 15.

@Psychol-Snooper

@@glenshea1967 It says something because 1982 was a great year for music! I first heard "Our House" when our school had a DJ playing music during the lunch break and had to have it. Recording it off the radio would not do.

Also... I paid like 15 dollars... over twice what you paid based on the 1982 exchange rate! I'm not pleased!
