Sunday Morning
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunday morning silence, curtain stay closed late
No one thinks of kitchens mornings in a filthy state
Dishes cups and beer stains, ashtrays on the floor
Sunday morning papers are left outside the front door

Sunday school and Sunday roast
Sunday papers Sunday post
Sunday morning Sunday rest
Sunday sermon Sunday best
(Sunday, bloody sunday rest)

Glass of fizzy water helps to start the day
Sit and listen to Sunday silence, problems fade away
Sunday cars and drivers break the morning air
Uncollected milk outside reveals there's no one there

Sunday school and Sunday roast
Sunday papers Sunday post
Sunday morning Sunday rest
Sunday sermon Sunday best

Sunday school and Sunday roast
Sunday papers Sunday post
Sunday morning Sunday rest
Sunday sermon Sunday best

Bathrobes hang in waiting, windows steaming up
Somewhere in the sink downstairs lies an unwashed cup
Tea and toast for breakfast clear away the plates
Wash-up prepare for cooking Sunday lunch awaits

Sunday lunch awaits
Sunday lunch awaits

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Madness’s song “Sunday Morning” describe the peaceful and lazy atmosphere of a typical Sunday morning, contrasting the mundanity of everyday life with the anticipation of rest and relaxation. The first verse paints a picture of a disheveled home after a wild Saturday night. The curtains are shut, dishes and ashtrays are scattered around, and the newspapers are left outside. The second verse refers to the typical rituals of a Sunday morning, such as drinking fizzy water and enjoying the silence. The third verse brings up the imagery of the outside world, with cars and drivers occupying the roads while the milk outside remains uncollected. The final verse is about the preparations for Sunday lunch, including clearing up after breakfast and washing the dishes.

The song has a very laid-back tone, reflecting the idea that Sunday is a day of rest and relaxation, free from the stresses of everyday life. It is a fitting tribute to the concept of the “lazy Sunday,” which is ingrained in many cultures and makes this song relatable to a diverse audience. The lyrics also convey a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time, when Sundays were sacred and people took the time to slow down.

MADNESS is unlike any Band I have heard. The songs these guys composed are really insane. How can they write such amazing songs with such unique melody, unorthodox chord changes and special music arrangements?? It baffled me for many years. Hmm...maybe you guys are advanced Intelligent Beings from another planet?

When I first heard 'GREY DAY'... I thought it a Count Dracula movie theme song. What a masterpiece! That was when I was hooked on Madness til today. Thank you Madness! You guys are beyond amazing.

Lee Roberts

One of their most musically adventurous songs

wezbrighton

The best British pop album of the 80’s IMO. A work of art.

Marcus Sewell
