That
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It doesn't hurt me (yeah, yeah, yo)
Do you wanna feel how it feels? (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Do you wanna know, know that it doesn't hurt me? (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Do you wanna hear about the deal that I'm making? (Yeah, yeah, yo)

You
It's you and me
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building

See, if I only could, oh

You don't wanna hurt me (yeah, yeah, yo)
But see how deep the bullet lies (yeah, yeah, yo)
Unaware, I'm tearing you asunder (yeah, yeah, yo)
Oh, there is thunder in our hearts (yeah, yeah, yo)
Is there so much hate for the ones we love? (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Oh, tell me we both matter, don't we? (Yeah, yeah, yo)

You
It's you and me

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building

Say, if I only could, oh

Overall Meaning

The song "Running Up That Hill" by Madness explores the emotions and desires of a person who wants to change positions with their loved one to protect them from pain. The opening lines of the song suggest that the singer is hurt, but they also assure the listener that the situation would not cause them pain. The singer questions if the other person wants to feel their emotions and then delves into the desire to make a deal with God to switch their position. The person wants to take on the pain of the other and wishes they could run up a hill or a building to do so.

The lines, "You don't wanna hurt me, but see how deep the bullet lies," indicate that the other person is causing pain unknowingly and unaware of the impact their actions have on the singer. The singer wonders why people have a lot of hatred for those they love and pleads with the other person, asking if they matter to each other. The song's chorus repeats the desire of the singer to take on the pain of their loved one and run up that hill, that road, or that building.

Overall, "Running Up That Hill" portrays the emotions of someone in love who is desperately trying to shield their significant other from pain. However, it also showcases the frustration of feeling hurt and unacknowledged by the other person. It is a poignant song about sacrifice, love, and empathy.

Another class song from their best album. The production is sublime. Recorded at the famous Air studios in the summer of 1982.

What a gem, couldn't get into it as a teenager, but now at 50 I see that this is their abbeyroad. Great musicality, and so young .

A very interesting fact about the cover art for this album, if you look on the back cover you can just about make out a penciled in mushroom cloud on the London skyline. It was a subtle nod to when the wind blows.
