You Said
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You said you're leaving well that's okay
You said you've had enough what can I say
I suppose I'll be sad for a week or two
But in the end it's the same for me and you
We'll both sorry through and through

You said you're leaving well that's okay
You said you've had enough what can I say
I suppose I'll be sad for a week or two
But in the end it's the same for me and you
We'll both sorry through and through
Me and you

You must stop doing this you've got to change
'Cause you hold all the cards you've got the range
Every time you go away I get to think

You said you're leaving
You said this you said
You said that you said
You don't want to see me no more
You said you don't want me
To come to your door
You said, you said

I suppose I'll be sad for a week or two
But in the end it's the same for me and you
We'll both sorry through and through
Yes we do

You must stop doing this you've got to change

'Cause you hold all the cards you've got the range
Every time you go away I get to think

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Madness's song "You Said" are a reflection of a relationship that is coming to an end. The singer's lover has announced that they are leaving and have had enough of the relationship. The singer acknowledges this and states that they will be sad for a week or two but ultimately, the end result will be the same for both of them. They will both feel sorry for what happened throughout the duration of their relationship.

The second verse talks about how the lover needs to change their ways and stop doing whatever it is that caused the end of the relationship. The singer acknowledges that the lover has all the power in the relationship and they need to take responsibility for their actions. The chorus repeats the same sentiments as the first verse and emphasizes that both parties will feel remorse over the end of the relationship.

The song appears to be about acceptance and coping with the end of a relationship. While the singer acknowledges the pain that will come with the end of the relationship, they seem to have come to terms with it and ultimately accept the situation for what it is.

My favorite track of the album. Don't know what it is but it gives me goose bumps every time I hear it.

Dead right man makes me feel alive!!

@michaelmurphy2330

Terrific bass line from Mark Bedford, it just propels the song forward, possibly my favourite song off the album, and Suggs vocals on this are really good.

@robleary3353

My favourite Madness LP. Love the 'rawness' of it!.

@bobnieuwenhuis3103

Brilliant, but underrated music. I don't love all the songs on the album,
but between the great hits, there are some pearls ...
Listen carefully, there is so much going on in these songs.
The record that I once owned doesn't have grooves anymore, they
became canyons.

@davidbradley3254

@RedGoldGreen-Dub
