Hung Up
Madonna Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby, night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Time goes by so slowly for those who wait
No time to hesitate
Those who run seem to have all the fun

I'm caught up
I don't know what to do
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
I don't know what to do

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby, night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby, night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Ring, ring, ring goes the telephone
The lights are on but there's no one home
Tick, tick, tock, it's a quarter to two
And I'm done, I'm hanging up on you

I can't keep on waiting for you
I know that you're still hesitating
Don't cry for me
'Cause I'll find my way
You'll wake up one day
But it'll be too late

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby, night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby, night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing
Every little thing
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Waiting for your call
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly

So slowly, so slowly, so slowly, so slowly
So slowly, so slowly, so slowly, so slowly
So slowly, so slowly, so slowly, so slowly
So slowly, so slowly

I don't know what to do

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby, night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby, night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing
Every little thing
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Waiting for your call

I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Overall Meaning

Madonna’s song “Hung Up” describes a situation in which she is in love with someone, but the person is not reciprocating her feelings. The repetitive lyrics “Time goes by so slowly” represents her frustration and impatience in waiting for a call or any sign of affection from the person. The line “Those who run seem to have all the fun” suggests that Madonna feels like she is missing out on life while waiting for someone who is not worth her time. She feels “hung up” on him, which means that she is unable to let go of her feelings and move on with her life.

Moreover, the song includes sound clips from ABBA’s “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” which complements Madonna’s message of being fed up with waiting on someone to give her attention. The use of an ABBA sample is also a tribute to Madonna’s admiration of the group.

@zappydoesmusic

Alright
Theres a lot of drama going in the comments about this song.

So, the original song that the riff was taken from was ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A man after midnight)

The following below was taken from Google.
"Madonna has revealed that she wrote a letter to the members of ABBA begging to use their music on one of her tracks. The star wanted permission to sample the Swedish pop titans' massive 1979 disco hit 'Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight)' for her latest single 'Hung Up', out on November 7."

When I did my research to clear things up.

Yes. Madonna DID NOT steal from ABBA. She got permission from the songwriters (Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus) to use the sample to her own song.

So yeah
Long story short
Madonna got permission from ABBA to use the sample.

Amazing abba mmeme

@cecilymacnamara1228

@Karl Pilkington It's all the way through but it constitutes about 2 bars worth of music. The melody for the verses and chorus are completely different. I love Abba's Gimme Gimme Gimme but it is very, very different to Hung Up. So huge props to Madonna for taking an Abba riff and making it into an entirely new song. And, unlike Gimme, Madonna's not doing abjection and despair. Well of course not!
