Paradise
Madonna Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't remember
When I was young
I can't explain
If it was wrong
My life goes on
But not the same
Into your eyes
My face remains (I've been so high)

I've been so down
Down to the ground

I was so blind
I could not see
Your paradise
Is not for me

Autour de moi
Je ne vois pas
Qui sont des anges
Sûrement pas moi
Encore une fois
Je suis cassée
Encore une fois
Je ne crois pas

I've been so high
I've been so down
Up to the skies
Down to the ground

There is a light
Above my head
Into your eyes
My face remains

I've been so high (been so high)
I've been so down (been so down)
Up to the skies (to the skies)
Down to the ground (to the ground)

I can't remember
When I was young
Into your eyes
My face remains

Into your eyes
My face remains

I've been so high (been so high)
I've been so down (been so down)
Up to the skies (to the skies)
Down to the ground (to the ground)

I've been so high (been so high)
I've been so down (been so down)

Up to the skies (to the skies)
Down to the ground (to the ground)

Overall Meaning

The song "Paradise" by Madonna is a contemplative and reflective piece that dives into the singer's feelings of confusion and disconnection towards finding true happiness. The opening lines suggest a state of forgetfulness, where the singer cannot remember when she was young or recall whether her past actions were right or wrong. The lyrics also mention the drastic changes in her life, where she may have gone through some emotional turmoil or an experience that alters her perception of the world around her. The line "into your eyes, my face remains" represents a sense of longing for someone or something that once brought happiness to her life.

The song talks about the contrasting states of being high and low, where the singer has experienced both extremes in life. She admits to being blind and unable to recognize the paradise that was within her surroundings that could bring her pure joy. This could symbolize her inability to appreciate the simple pleasures in life or take them for granted. The French lyrics "Autour de moi, je ne vois pas, qui sont des anges, sûrement pas moi" roughly translates to "Around me, I do not see angels, certainly not me." This line suggests that the singer is feeling guilty and undeserving of a blissful environment like paradise.

The repetition of "I've been so high, been so down, up to the skies, down to the ground" highlights the rollercoaster of emotions the singer has been through. The closing lines of the song suggest that despite all the highs and lows, the memories of the person who brought her happiness still remain intact and provide a sense of comfort.

Today I was reading about people’s opinion about Madonna’s career in comparison to other singers like Gaga, Mariah etc ... none of these singers( they may be better vocalists) but the vision, the artistry , the music , the depth of the songs you can’t compare ... Madonna is really ahead of her time and her work is timeless ...

Gina Sousa Branco

They aren't better singers. Period

The way I see it: Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga... They all have better voices and vocals than Madonna because they are "true singers" but Madonna... She somehow is remarkable because she's an ARTIST and will be unforgettable!

sergio barreiro sanmartín

She was ahead of her time. Today she limits herself to doing what others already do. From "Rebel Heart". she musically she is dead!

Spiral Dynamics

All same .... /👁\ ....

Al Tomoson

Mariah WAS a more accomplished singer but Madonna IS a far more talented dancer, writer, performer & musician. Gaga has never been a better singer and she is a FAR less accomplished dancer, writer, performer and entertainer. If she was all those things better than Madonna she would have more hits, more sales, more world records, concert ticket revenue and overall credibility. And she hasnt. 10 years in and Gaga has already peaked. Madonna covered her career with just one album

I love how even Madonna's backdrops have more substance, style, cinematography, message and artistic quality than majority of the general music videos! She is truly the champion of visual formats.

Giuseppe Fantini

yes, along with Gaga.♡

@Giuseppe Fantini Gaga?! ROTFL

@Giuseppe Fantini Gaga? but have you seen her ultra cheap "Stupid love" video? It hurts just seeing it. And hey, I love Gaga. But I won´t admit ridiculous comparisons. There´s not other Madonna. Period.
