Naked
Mae Estes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Keep you coming back for more
Let you see the part that's dressed up, my best of
If that's what you're here for
But if you're in it for the real thing
You're gonna have to see the scars
All the bruises underneath, all the me that
If I
Let you strip me down to the bare bones
Every part of me, nothing unknown
If it goes that far, baby you can't fake it
If I let you see me naked
Oh, naked
It's hard to let go of the armor
And I know I'm safer in disguise
But you feel like everything I've wanted
And honestly, I don't wanna hide
So baby if I
Let you strip me down to the bare bones
Every part of me, nothing unknown
If it goes that far, baby you can't fake it
If I let you see me naked
Oh, naked
I can't cover up these feelings for ya
I've already been exposed
Every time we talk, you got me taking off
More than my clothes
And if I
Let you strip me down to the bare bones
Every part of me, nothing unknown
If it goes that far, baby you can't fake it
If I let you see me naked
Oh, naked
Let you see me naked, oh whoa
Naked
The lyrics of Mae Estes' song "Naked" is about vulnerability, authenticity and trust in a romantic relationship. She is acknowledging her ability to put on a facade, to hide her true self behind "smoke and mirrors", but she is also admitting that it is not what she wants in a relationship. Mae Estes is looking for a genuine connection with someone who can see her for who she really is, beyond her superficial traits. She acknowledges that it can be scary to let go of the armor and show one's true self, but she feels ready to take the risk with this person. If they are willing to go all the way with her, to see her "bruises underneath, all the me that makes up this heart", she is willing to be vulnerable, to let them see her "naked".
The chorus is repeated thrice, with the same message of being stripped down to the bare bones, having nothing unknown and not faking anything. Mae Estes is conveying the message that true love accepts a person wholly, with all their faults and imperfections. When she says, "Every time we talk, you got me taking off more than my clothes", it means that this person makes her feel comfortable enough to reveal more and more of herself, and not just physically. In essence, "Naked" is a song about embracing vulnerability and opening oneself to love, to forge a genuine connection with someone who loves and accepts us for who we are, with all our flaws and imperfections.
