Today her value is recognized, not only in Portugal but also in many foreign countries, where her presence is regularly requested.
Mafalda Arnauth, her first album released in 1999, was immediately acclaimed by specialists and won the Prize for Best Upcoming Voice by the weekly magazine Blitz, a sign that new generations are back into fado.
After a year filled with concerts and important invitations, that took her to the most important concert halls in The Netherlands, the Louisiana Centre (Denmark) and to Italy, to perform in the festival Sete-Sois, Sete-Luas, an important Mediterranean folk event, she sang at Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon), where she was warmly acclaimed by the press.
Mafalda's second album, Esta voz que me atravessa (This voice that goes through me) was reelased in 2001 and it was produced by Amélia Muge and José Martins. Her album Encantamento was self-produced. She feels it "leaves fatality, disgrace, and nostalgia behind. Hope is fed on sadness; inspiration on suffering; strength and courage on diffculties."
No Teu Poema

No teu poema
Existe a dor calada lá no fundo
O passo da coragem em casa escura
E aberta, uma varanda para o Mundo
Existe a noite
O riso e a voz refeita à luz do dia
No teu poema
No teu poema
Existe um cantochão alentejano
A rua e o pregão de uma varina
E um barco assoprado a todo o pano
Existe a noite
No teu poema
Existe a esperança acesa atrás do muro
Mafalda Arnauth’s poem No Teu Poema is a thought-provoking reflection on the different facets of life. The song is a metaphor for life, with the poem representing the different events, emotions, and experiences that shape it. The first stanza sets the tone for the rest of the poem with the description of a blank verse that represents the unknown that exists within every person’s life. The poem describes a spectrum of different human experiences, from joy, laughter, and hope to sorrow, pain, and exhaustion.
The words “existe a noite” (there is the night) echo the idea of life being composed of contrasting moments such as light and dark, joy and pain. Mafalda Arnauth sings about the human capacity to endure life’s struggles despite the fear and doubt that accompany them. In the second verse, the river serves as a powerful symbol of the journey of life. The river navigates through obstacles, representing the adversity that people encounter in life, but also gives hope that there is a path to navigate against them. The last stanza conveys a hopeful message, that even when things seem insurmountable, the road is not yet finished, and there's still a chance to move beyond our pasts towards a brighter future.
No Teu Poema is an emotionally charged song that is lyrically and musically brilliant. The song compares the poetic form to life, from the beginning to the end. With its musical fusion of traditional Portuguese and contemporary elements, it serves as a tribute to traditional Portuguese music. The song is a feast of emotions that has the power to touch hearts, to inspire, and to evoke different feelings within each listener.
