These Dreams
Maggie Reilly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spare a little candle, save some light for me
Figures up ahead moving in the trees
White skin in a linen, perfume on my wrist
Full moon that hangs over these dreams in the mist

Darkness on the edge, shadows where I stand
I search for the time on a watch with no hands
I want to see you clearly, come closer than this
All I remember are dreams in the mist

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

Is it clockin' dagger, could it be spring or fall
I walk without a cut through a stain glass wall
Weaker in my eyesight, the candle in my grip
And words that have no form are falling from my lips

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

The sweetest song is silence that I've ever heard
It's funny how your feet in dreams never touch the earth
In a wood full of princes, freedom is a kiss
But the prince hides his face from these dreams in the mist

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life

These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

Overall Meaning

The song "These Dreams" by Maggie Reilly is a haunting ballad that seems to explore the themes of longing, mystery, and dreams. The lyrics are particularly striking as they are built around images of darkness and mist, creating an enigmatic and otherworldly atmosphere.

The first verse starts with the line, "Spare a little candle, save some light for me," which immediately evokes a feeling of intimacy and vulnerability. The singer then describes figures moving in the trees and a full moon hovering over their dreams. The second verse is more introspective as the singer admits they are searching for something elusive and intangible, using the metaphor of a watch with no hands. The chorus repeats the idea that these dreams never stop and that the singer seems to live another life every night.

In the final verse, the song takes a turn as the singer describes the sweetest song being silence, but then talks about how even in dreams, their feet don't touch the earth. There seems to be an underlying sense of sorrow and loss in the song, as if the singer is reaching for something that they can't quite grasp or has already slipped away.

Overall, "These Dreams" is a hauntingly beautiful song that invites listeners to ponder the mysteries of the unconscious mind and the power of dreams.
