Back In My Body
Maggie Rogers Lyrics

I was stopped in London when I felt it coming down
Crashing all around me with a great triumphant sound
Like the dam was breaking and my mind came rushing in
I was stopped in London, oh, I was awakening
I was

I was o'er in Paris when I almost ran away
Two times round the block before I decided to stay
Puffed along a cigarette that went and made me sick
Spent another day pretending I was over it

This time, I know I'm fighting
This time, I know I'm (back in my body)
This time, I know I'm fighting
This time, I know I'm back in my body, oh
I'm back in my body, oh

(Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

And all along the highway there's a tiny whispering sound
Saying I could find you in the dark of any town
But all that I am hearing in the poem of my mind
Are sullen, twisted words finding their way in every line

Oh, this time, oh, this time

This time, I know I'm fighting
This time, I know I'm (back in my body)
This time, I know I'm fighting
This time, I know I'm (back in my body)
Lost you in the border town of anywhere
I found myself when I was going everywhere
This time, I know I'm fighting
This time, I know I'm

(Back in my body, oh, oh)
(Back in my body, oh, oh)
(Back in my body, oh, oh)

Oh, this time, oh, this time
Oh, this time, oh, this time
Oh, this time, oh, this time
Oh, this time, oh, this time

This time, I know I'm fighting
This time, I know I'm (back in my body)
This time, I know I'm fighting
This time, I know I'm (back in my body)
Lost you in the border town of anywhere
I found myself when I was going everywhere
This time, I know I'm fighting
This time, I know I'm back in my body, oh
I'm back in my body, oh

I'm back in my body, oh
Back in my body, oh, oh

Overall Meaning

The song "Back In My Body" by Maggie Rogers is a reflection on the journey of self-discovery and reclaiming one's personal power. The first verse talks about being overwhelmed and having a mental breakdown in London, feeling like the dam was breaking and the mind was rushing in. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the breakdown of one's mental and emotional barriers, allowing their true self to come into focus. The following verse talks about being in Paris, contemplating running away but ultimately deciding to face the situation at hand. The line "pretending I was over it" implies that there was a past hurt or pain that the singer was trying to ignore or suppress.

The chorus of the song is an affirmation of the singer's personal strength, stating that they are back in their body and ready to fight for what they want, despite having lost something or someone in the morning. The lines "I found myself when I was going everywhere" could be interpreted as the singer finding their sense of self through traveling or experiencing new things.

The final verse talks about the idea of finding someone "in the dark of any town" but ultimately realizing that the true journey is within oneself, with "twisted words finding their way in every line" implying that the journey of self-discovery is not always straightforward or easy. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the singer's newfound sense of empowerment.

I love this song. I struggled with a panic disorder for 10 years. Panic attacks were like being trapped in a cage with a tiger--you're in fight or flight, but you can't get away (flight) and you can't possibly beat a tiger (fight). You were trapped and there was nowhere to go, because the fight was inside your own head.
This song reminds me of how it felt when panic attacks were over and I entered the world again. My hands and feet felt like they belonged to me, my heart stopped racing, my mind quieted. Like I was re-integrated with my body instead of outside of it. The last one was in 2015, and I thank God every day for the prayer and therapy that ultimately led me to overcome them. I've been back in my body for 4.5 years, and I haven't missed a minute of it.
Praying for all of you who are still fighting the battle. Stay strong--you're worth the win <3

I feel the same way about this song. When I heard it for the first time, it became almost an anthem of sorts for whenever I have a panic attack.

"I found myself when I was going everywhere"...I can relate to that line. When I started traveling a few years ago, I felt like a new person. I felt alive. There's a whole world outside my neighborhood.
