After the Pharrell video went viral, several different record labels tried to sign Rogers. She ended up negotiating a contract with Capitol Records where "she licenses her music to them through her own imprint, Debay Sounds." As a result, she has more control over her sound and image than many artists at a similar place in their music careers.
Rogers's EP, Now That the Light Is Fading, was released on February 17, 2017. She released her major-label debut album, Heard It In a Past Life, in January 2019. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200.
She made her television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on February 15, 2017, Saturday Night Live debut on November 3, 2018 and Today Show debut on July 12, 2019.
She cites Carrie Brownstein, Patti Smith, Kim Gordon, and Björk as her musical inspirations, while prominent singers Brandi Carlile and Sharon Van Etten - who she calls her "musical big sisters" - have become mentors. She also mentioned in her initial conversation with Williams that she has synesthesia, a benign condition where one or more senses is perceived at once. In her case, she is able to perceive colours as a response to hearing music.

If I told you I got caught up in a wave?
Almost gave it away
Would you hear me out
If I told you I was terrified for days?
Thought I was gonna break
Oh, I couldn't stop it
Crying in the bathroom
Had to figure it out
With everyone around me saying
"You must be so happy now"
Oh, if you keep reachin' out
Then I'll keep comin' back
'Cause if you're gone for good
Then I'm okay with that
If you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
And I am findin' out
There's just no other way
That I'm still dancin'
At the end of the day
If you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
And do you believe me now
That I always had the best intentions, babe?
Always wanted to stay
And can you feel me now
That I'm vulnerable in oh-so many ways?
Oh, and I'll never change
Oh, I couldn't stop it
Tried to figure it out
But everything kept moving
And the noise got too loud
With everyone around me saying
"You should be so happy now"
Oh, if you keep reachin' out
Then I'll keep comin' back
And if you're gone for good
Then I'm okay with that
And if you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
And I am findin' out
There's just no other way
That I'm still dancin'
At the end of the day
And if you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
Oh, leave the light on
Oh, would you leave the light on?
Oh
If you keep reachin' out
Then I'll keep comin' back
But if you're gone for good
Then I'm okay with that
If you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
And I am findin' out
There's just no other way
That I'm still dancin'
At the end of the day
And if you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
Oh, if you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
Oh, if you leave the light on
Mm
In Maggie Rogers's song Light On, she talks about her struggles with fame and the pressure that comes along with it. The first verse reveals that Rogers almost gave up during a wave of anxiety and fear. The pressure becomes overwhelming, with everyone around her assuming she must be happy, but she's struggling to keep it together. The chorus is an invitation to a loved one to leave the light on, as Rogers promises to never change and to always come back, even though she acknowledges that sometimes that might not be enough.
In the second verse, Rogers emphasizes that her intentions are good and that she's always wanted to stay true to herself. She is vulnerable in many ways, and despite her best efforts, she cannot control the chaos around her. The chorus repeats again, this time with more conviction, as Rogers seems to find solace in the idea that leaving the light on can be a metaphor for hope and a glimpse of a better future.
Overall, the song seems to be an honest and heartfelt portrayal of the struggles of fame, and the pressure that comes with it. Rogers's raw and powerful voice captures the emotions of the song perfectly, making it an incredibly moving piece of music.

The lyrics is one thing... her voice!? It's one of those voices that live as musical notes bouncing through the air... listen how smooth and soft and echoed and balanced she sings,
You keep reaching out
I'm ok with that
There's no other way
I'm still dancing
At the end of the day.
If you leave the light on, then I will leave the light on.
