After the Pharrell video went viral, several different record labels tried to sign Rogers. She ended up negotiating a contract with Capitol Records where "she licenses her music to them through her own imprint, Debay Sounds." As a result, she has more control over her sound and image than many artists at a similar place in their music careers.
Rogers's EP, Now That the Light Is Fading, was released on February 17, 2017. She released her major-label debut album, Heard It In a Past Life, in January 2019. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200.
She made her television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on February 15, 2017, Saturday Night Live debut on November 3, 2018 and Today Show debut on July 12, 2019.
She cites Carrie Brownstein, Patti Smith, Kim Gordon, and Björk as her musical inspirations, while prominent singers Brandi Carlile and Sharon Van Etten - who she calls her "musical big sisters" - have become mentors. She also mentioned in her initial conversation with Williams that she has synesthesia, a benign condition where one or more senses is perceived at once. In her case, she is able to perceive colours as a response to hearing music.

Is there a cure for this hunger?
A terrible curse to be under
I'll be sleeping with that
And it's no small thing
You'll smoke me out in your own ways
And chase me around until mornin'
And follow me back
And lovely
You're tearing me down with your cheek bones
They're warm but they hit me like sharp stones
When you pull away
Now I walk slow
I wander the streets in the morning
I still smell your scent like a warning
When the wind blows
Oh, when the wind blows
So leave me
When you're sleeping alone in the basement
And my parents are home but I'm vacant
And I'm watching the news
And 'cause I'm slow now
I'm young but I feel like an old man
The tar in my lungs and these cold hands
They held onto you
No Keep me
Inside of your mind
When you're aching
Lord, 'cause for now we're mistaken
In thinking we fit
But I'll stay steady
When nights are ablazin'
And heavy
Alone in my room and I'm ready
To rest for a while
Oh, rest for a while
Oh, but I don't mind it
I don't mind it
I don't mind
Honey, I don't mind
Oh, but I don't mind it
I don't mind it
I don't mind it
I don't mind it
And I
I don't mind it (I'll wait and I'll listen)
I don't mind it (and see you through to the kitchen)
I don't mind it(I'm not taking it back)
I don't mind it
Oh, and I don't mind it
I don't mind it
I don't mind it
I don't mind it
I don't mind it
I don't mind it
I
Oh, honey I don't mind
The lyrics to "New Song" by Maggie Rogers are reflective and pensive, touching upon themes of love, loss, and longing. The opening lines "And darling, is there a cure for this hunger? A terrible curse to be under, I'll be sleeping with that" convey a sense of yearning and desperation. The singer is asking if there is a way to alleviate the strong desire she feels for someone, which is likened to a curse that she can't escape from. The next lines, "You'll smoke me out in your own ways, and chase me around until mornin', and follow me by," convey a sense of obsession and a willingness to be pursued until the early hours of the morning.
The second verse takes a darker turn, as she talks about being torn down by the object of her affection: "Tearing me down with your cheekbones, they're warm but they hit me like sharp stones, when you pull away." The mention of wandering the streets in the morning, smelling the person's "sin like a warning", and feeling like an "old man" all add to the sense of despair and heartbreak. In the final verse, she considers the idea of being kept in the other person's mind, while also acknowledging that they are "mistaken" in thinking they fit together. In spite of this, she claims that she doesn't mind, repeatedly affirming this sentiment in the chorus.
Overall, "New Song" is a poignant exploration of the complexities of love, infatuation, and the pain and joy that comes with it.
