After the Pharrell video went viral, several different record labels tried to sign Rogers. She ended up negotiating a contract with Capitol Records where "she licenses her music to them through her own imprint, Debay Sounds." As a result, she has more control over her sound and image than many artists at a similar place in their music careers.
Rogers's EP, Now That the Light Is Fading, was released on February 17, 2017. She released her major-label debut album, Heard It In a Past Life, in January 2019. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200.
She made her television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on February 15, 2017, Saturday Night Live debut on November 3, 2018 and Today Show debut on July 12, 2019.
She cites Carrie Brownstein, Patti Smith, Kim Gordon, and Björk as her musical inspirations, while prominent singers Brandi Carlile and Sharon Van Etten - who she calls her "musical big sisters" - have become mentors. She also mentioned in her initial conversation with Williams that she has synesthesia, a benign condition where one or more senses is perceived at once. In her case, she is able to perceive colours as a response to hearing music.

Trying to make hits so we could play them loud
Picking at our souls like we didn't know
Just like we were only playing with the sound
Trying to control what was so low
But I never knew how then to just go and let it out
Get it out
But if you could fight, if you could choose
If you could say all the things you wanted to
If you couldn't lie
If you would only move like you had something to lose
If you could cry, if you couldn't sleep it off
If you could feel everything you've ever caused
If you couldn't lie
If you would only move like you had something to lose
Like you had something to lose
Like you had something to lose
And I'm not saying I would always speak up
That it didn't creep up on me all the time
I'm just saying there was a window
Where you could've let go in that place and time
Laughing all it off like it was innocent
Oh, but all I ever wanted was to get rid of it and let it out
Get it out
But if you could fight, if you could choose
If you could say all the things you wanted to
If you couldn't lie
If you would only move like you had something to lose
If you could cry, if you couldn't sleep it off
If you could feel everything you've ever caused
If you couldn't lie
If you would only move like you had something to lose
Like you had something to lose
Like you had something to lose
And I can see us there
You staring at me
And me just praying for air
I can see us there
Standing cheek to cheek
And counting week by week
Wishing everything would be clear
I can see us there
I can see us there
But if you could fight, if you could choose
If you could say all the things you wanted to
If you couldn't lie
If you would only move like you had something to lose
If you could cry, if you couldn't sleep it off
If you could feel everything you've ever caused
If you couldn't lie
If you would only move like you had something to lose
Like you had something to lose
Like you had something to lose
Like you had something to lose
In Maggie Rogers's song Split Stones, the lyrics depict a sense of introspection and a desire for honesty that comes with accepting one's faults and imperfections. The opening lines reflect on how they are trying to create music and be heard, but they are also struggling with reflecting on themselves, highlighting the tension between aspirations and self-knowledge. They are picking at their souls, wrestling with self-expression, as if struggling to find the right words or melody to reflect their emotions.
The chorus encourages a sense of agency and accountability. It calls for the listener to fight, choose, and be honest about their emotions or actions. The lines "if you could feel everything you've ever caused" and "if you would only move like you had something to lose" evoke a sense of responsibility and ownership of one's past mistakes or decisions. The lyrics suggest that it's difficult, but critical, to face one's fears and limitations, even if it means acknowledging uncomfortable truths.
The last verse reflects on a moment in time that is filled with missed opportunities to be honest and authentic. The lyrics highlight a sense of regret for not having been true to oneself in that moment. The lines "Laughing all it off like it was innocent" suggest a form of self-deception that privileges comfort over truth. The song ends with a nostalgic reflection on the past that's tinged with a sense of what could have been.
