The Magnets - British Vocal Group
American Magnets : Hailing from Denton, Texas, Magnets meld traditional rock elements with more unorthodox compositional ideas. They released their first eponymous EP, in November 2008
British The Magnets : The Magnets are a 6 piece British a cappella group. Formed of Nicolaas Doodson, Michael Welton, James Fortune, Andrew Frost, Stephen Trowell and Derek Elroy.
The group formed whilst at university together in a production of Guys and Dolls.
They were immediately signed up to EMI and released their debut album, Giving It All That, in 2001. The following few years saw them tour with the likes of Lisa Stansfield, Michael Ball, Tom Jones and Geri Halliwell, with appearances on the Michael Parkinson Show, Blue Peter and GMTV.[citation needed] In 2004 the group released Another Place, which featured nine original songs and two covers, including a rendition of Stephen Stills' "For What It's Worth".
The last two years have seen them perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and currently they are on a European tour showcasing a talent for more theatre-based productions in the show Vox Pop.
SUMMER
Magnets Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All is quiet, all is calm
The air thick with stale smoke,
Your cheap perfume and alcohol
And although you know you need him
Like a stake through your heart
You think it's worse to stay apart
And it will hurt you more than most
Cause you're still trying to mine for memories in a ghost
Yeah, it's the last day of summer
And you know you're not supposed,
But you're still trying to mine for memories in a ghost
You're absence makes no sense,
just a constant state of suspense
And although you both know
The bubble might burst as soon as you meet
Another false start, rather than to stay apart
Cause it's the last day of summer,
And it will hurt you more than most
Cause you're still trying to mine for memories in a ghost
Yeah, it's the last day of summer
And you know you're not supposed,
But you're still trying to mine for memories in a ghost
It's the last day of summer
And you know you're not supposed
You're still trying to mine for memories in a ghost
It's the last day of summer
It's the last day of summer
It's the last day of summer
In "Summer," Magnets describes a bittersweet, nostalgic feeling of longing for someone who isn't present. The lyrics paint an image of a quiet, post-coital scene, with the air thick with smoke and the scent of alcohol and perfume. The singer knows that being with this person is bad for them, like a stake through the heart, but the pain of being apart is even worse. The song touches on the idea of trying to hold onto memories and feelings that are no longer there, like trying to mine for something in a ghost.
The theme of the song is centered around a sense of loss or longing for something that isn't there anymore. The singer is trying to hold onto a person, a memory, or a feeling, but it's slipping away. The last day of summer serves as a metaphor for this, as it's a fleeting moment that can never be recaptured. The song captures the feeling of wanting to hold onto something that's already gone, the nostalgia making it hard to let go.
Overall, "Summer" is a beautifully written song that delves into complex emotions surrounding loss and longing. The lyrics are poetic and introspective, and the melody is haunting and melancholic.
