1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

Stayin' Alive
Magnum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your direction will be yours alone to bear
But though it may be long
And many times go wrong
You're on your own, this journey none can share
And there is no other way of staying alive
Just killing time, nowhere to hide
It's always harder where two roads divide
And before us lies a choice that's not too clear
Many voices offer words upon you ear
And running through your head
Are some best left unsaid
Don't listen just to things you'd like to hear
And there is no other way of staying alive
Just killing time, nowhere to hide
Staying alive, oh, can you decide?
It's always harder where two roads divide
Heading slowly through still waters
Dream away
But it's always growing shorter
From the day
Throw your dreams away
None of us on this earth will be here
On our children, will the sentence be severe?
But still we carry on
Doing what we've done
An explanation I just can't see clear
And there is no other way of staying alive
Just killing time, nowhere to hide
Staying alive
Just killing time, nowhere to hide
Staying alive
Just killing time, nowhere to hide
Staying alive, oh, can you decide?
It's always harder where two roads divide
The lyrics of Magnum's song, Stayin' Alive, encourage individuals to be cautious and thoughtful in the path they choose in life. The lyrics advise that the journey will be difficult and it may take a few wrong turns, but individuals must travel alone and make their own way. The decision-making process can be overwhelming where different opinions come in, and one needs to be practical in what they hear and analyze what is good for them. The chorus reminds one that the only way to survive and stay alive in life is to keep moving forward, as there is no other way. It suggests that there is no escape except to face the problems and make the right choices. The song also touches on the responsibility people have that whatever they do, their children may also be affected by their choices.
As for the historical context of the song, it was released by Magnum, an English rock band, in 1983. It was released as a single and featured in their album "The Eleventh Hour." The song was composed by Tony Clarkin, the guitarist of the band, and Bob Catley, the lead singer. Although the song has a similar title to the Bee Gees' hit "Stayin' Alive," and we can see the lyrics "staying alive," the song has no musical or lyrical connection to it.
