Stormy Weather
Magnum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The rain beats on my window,
And the rain light up the dark,
It starts the shadows chasing,
And the dogs on the run begin to bark.

The church bell's strikning midnight,
And the lights have all gone down,
The sea's as dark as thunder,
And I feel like a wanted man on sacred ground.

Now the wind cries out, it's taking you away,
But there's nothing I can do.

Chorus
Passing ships into the night,
We can't stay together,
I won't win but I can fight,
Looks like we're in for stormy weather.

There's a fog down on the beach,
It rolls on forever,
You get further out of reach,
Looks like we're in for stormy weather.

Tall lights on the highway,
They disappear from view,

There's no-one coming my way,
Now I've lost it all it seems I'm losing you.

Overall Meaning

Magnum's song Stormy Weather is all about a relationship that is in trouble. The song opens with the singer looking out of the window at the rain that is beating down on it. He goes on to say that the rain lightens up the dark and starts the shadows chasing which are symbolic of the problems in his relationship. He then talks about the church bell striking midnight and the lights all going down which signifies something ominous about to happen. The sea is also as dark as thunder, and he feels like a wanted man on sacred ground. This line could mean that he feels as though he is not at ease in the place that he calls home, or the love that he once had is just not there anymore.

The wind cries out and is taking away his significant other. He feels like there is nothing he can do to stop the stormy weather that is in their relationship. The chorus of the song talks about passing ships into the night and how they can't stay together. The singer knows that he won't win, but he can fight. It's like they are in for the long haul, and they are facing stormy weather that they cannot avoid. There's a fog down on the beach that rolls on forever, which makes the relationship even harder to deal with. The singer knows that they are further out of reach and that they are in for a rough ride.
