1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

The Spirit
Magnum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Nor cryptic message scrawled upon every wall
Street corner justice beware
The spirit will find you always be fair
The shallow verse once read means nothing at all
Nor fearful gestures made for instant recall
In lies your heart will not share
The spirit that guides you follow it through
To the spirit inside you always be true
You know you'll despair
If the spirit inside you used without care
The battlefield of glory pales into rust
The river flows much thicker fed by each thrust
No beast alive does compare
The spirit beside you everywhere
Let not your head be turned by tainted reward
And dreams of fortune won forever to hoard
Your conscience could not repair
The spirit inside you used without care
'Cause it will be your shelter, help you how to decide
And it will be your helper should your loyalties divide
Oh, the spirit that guides you follow it through
To the spirit inside you always be true
You know you'll despair
If the spirit inside you is used without care
The ash of pages swept before the cruel wind
The loss of choices praises noone will sing
No clues to how you will fare
The spirit implores you tread where you dare
The dust lies thick on casket rich or quite poor
Distinction disappears the worm both deplore
The candle burns out once more
But the spirit inside you won't be ignored
Oh, the spirit that guides you follow it through
To the spirit inside you always be true
You know you'll despair
If the spirit inside you is used without care
Oh, the spirit that guides you follow it through
The lyrics of Magnum's song "The Spirit" encourage the listener to be true to their inner spirit, to trust their intuition and not to be swayed by external influences. The opening lines warn against putting faith in meaningless promises and superficial gestures, instead advocating for the listener to abide by the spirit within, to always act with fairness and to follow the guiding force within themselves. The chorus reinforces this message, urging the listener to follow their spirit and be true to themselves, with the consequences of ignoring one's inner voice leading to despair.
The song uses vivid imagery to underscore its message, with references to battlefields, rivers, and ashes representing the losses experienced in life when one ignores their true spirit. The lyrics warn against letting material rewards cloud one's judgement and against being controlled by fear or greed. Ultimately, the song advocates for an inner strength and resilience that can only come from following one's spiritual compass.
The song also makes use of biblical references, with lines like "let not your head be turned by tainted reward" and "your conscience could not repair" evoking a sense of morality and divine judgement. This further reinforces the message that one's inner spirit is the true guiding force in life.
