1. Mainland is made up of four New York City transplants β by way of California and Upstate New York β who met each other at rooftop parties in the summer of 2010. They quickly formed a following around Manhattan and Brooklyn, ultimately getting profiled in the L Magazineβs noted β8 Bands You Need to Hear" issue, an annual cull of must-hear groups. Rolling Stone, French Elle, Consequence of Sound, and Interview Magazine have all since touted the group.
Mainland recently finished recording their new EP "Girls Unknown" with Luke David, who produced Topfβs previous group, the Vox Jaguars. The band labored on it throughout summer from the 100-year-old Shepard Hall in Harlem and their studio (dubbed the βBrickhouse"), a cavernous underground grotto at the foot of the Manhattan Bridge. The debut record is filled with Mainlandβs tight song structures, poppy guitar riffs, and New York attitude that takes listeners to the warm space between melancholy and pleasure. The band will be embarking on their first American tour this summer in support of their new EP.
2. Mainland is a blues/rock/jazz/funk band from Basel, Switzerland.

Mainland Lyrics

Like Barbour jackets and wedding rings
God is on my side from time-to-time
4, 5, 6 7th heaven, 8
9 lives I've been living still getting mine
Black tar swipecard, kid get in line
Chin up young beggars it's a new day
Here's a little something that I had to say...
Don't stop, don't give up
Don't give up,
When you've got the world circling, circling around
Don't stop, don't give up
Don't give up,
When you've got the world circling, tumbling down
Begging on a train can buy you a lot of things
Like turn-A-trick chics and trampolines
God is on my side from time-to-time
Coming up for air, fight to survive
I could use a week's paid vacation
I could use a little motivation
Rise up young beggars it's a new day
Here's a little something that I had to say...
Don't stop, don't give up
Don't give up,
When you've got the world circling, circling around
Don't stop, don't give up
Don't give up,
When you've got the world circling, tumbling down
Begging on a train
Begging on a train
Begging on a train
Begging on a train
Holding on to my dreams
Before they go up in flames again
Don't stop, don't give up
Don't give up,
When you've got the world circling, circling around
Don't stop, don't give up
Don't give up,
When you've got the world circling, tumbling down
The song "Beggars" by Mainland speaks about the struggles of living in poverty and resorting to begging for survival. The first verse talks about how begging on a train can buy a person things like expensive jackets and rings, but acknowledges the presence of God in the beggar's life from time to time. The song then moves on to talk about how the beggar is still fighting to survive and is determined to make it through their tough circumstances. The chorus is a message of encouragement and perseverance, urging the listener not to give up when the world around them seems to be tumbling down.
The second verse talks about how begging on a train can also provide the person with fleeting pleasures such as sexual encounters and trampolines, but reiterates the need to constantly fight and strive towards something more meaningful. The bridge of the song emphasizes the importance of holding onto one's dreams, despite the risk of them going up in flames.
Overall, the song highlights the harsh reality of life for those living in poverty and the desperate measures they may take in order to survive. It encourages listeners to confront and overcome their struggles with resilience and determination.
