(1) The UK Major Major are a local grand, alterna-pop group that has come from out of nowhere with a sound that’s just quirky enough for indie rock fans and also highly marketable. Their upcoming debut album, recorded and produced by local Lars Goransson arrives soon, and if they play their cards right the group will be set for certain heat-seeker status. Soaring vocals hijack the focal point of many of the songs with their sometimes Muse-esque method, and spacey keyboards fill out the four-piece rock sound nicely.
(2) Major Major is a one man’s show from Sweden creating vibrant songs with digital and acoustic tools. Recorded at home, the songs are often rough and unpolished but indeed vibrant and eclectic. His work is reminiscent to the nervous tense of Sparklehorse, the isolationism of Stina Nordenstam and the melody-empathized storytelling of Damien Jurado. The music is a mix of several genres and an extra flare is added by the occasional use of guest vocalists.
(3) Major Major were a indie-rock four-piece formed in 2006 from Melbourne, Australia, who have since disbanded. They released two EPs, one self-titled and 2008's 'Great Leagues'. The band originally played a brand of Weezer-inspired indie-pop but gradually moved into more sprawling, baroque rock as heard on their track 'The Beast'.

Major Major Lyrics

Your money smells, your cellphone rings.
My friend called up, I did not answer
Because my cellphone gave him cancer.
Microwaves will warm your mind
and leave you staring at the floor.
Microwaves will bide their time
I can't believe my luck today.
Looks like it's going to go my way.
My friend called up, I didn't answer.
Because his cellphone gave me cancer.
Microwaves will warm your mind
and leave you staring at the floor.
Microwaves will bide their time
until you don't care anymore.
The lyrics to Major Major's song "Microwave" outline a deeply cynical and pessimistic view of society and technology. The first verse finds the singer proclaiming their dissatisfaction with modern life, from the smell of money to the interruption of cellphones. The second line seems particularly telling, as the singer seems to long for a simpler world where the trappings of modern society aren't so prevalent.
But it's the second verse that really drives home Major Major's message. Here, the singer takes on the idea of microwaves as a metaphor for the toxic effects of technology. While microwaves might seem innocuous enough, they're actually capable of "warming your mind" in a way that can leave you feeling lost and disconnected. The idea is that technology has a way of lulling us into complacency, until we're no longer capable of caring about anything at all.
Taken together, the two verses paint a bleak picture of modern life. Technology has gone too far, and we're all paying the price. Whether we're being bombarded by cellphones or slowly being worn down by microwaves, there seems to be no escape from the hollowing-out effects of technology.
