Impermanence
Major Parkinson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see you only try to kill the pain
Lying on the carpet like a child, impermanence in your vein
You know it's never gonna be the same
Summer's running through the everglaeds, rounding up the daisy chains
When all that you gave is all that you got
Raindrops dripping from a parasol
Making bubbles to collect the blue skies
Made you tremble, made you small
In the impermanence of the fall
You build a house, you change your name
I know you only try to love somebody through your cold restraints
The stations ever passing by your train
In this moment that we can't explain, in difference we are the same
All that we give is all that we got
Sidewalks are moving slowly, like an escalator in the brickwork of a tailor
The skyline is a hummingbird trading poems for a crossword
It takes you even deeper, you fall into a stupor of imagination
Tell me where you want to go, tell me where you want to go
All that we give is all that we got
All your life you've been looking for someone to love
Someone to caress you, now you are lost
You felt something wasn't right, you had your reasons
All of the quotes from Keats, TS Eliot, Byron and Pope

They tore something that was yours
Infantile playing in between the changing seasons

Overall Meaning

The song “Impermanence” by Major Parkinson talks about the theme of change and how we all react to it. The lyrics convey a sense of resignation to the inevitability of change yet at the same time, there is a sense of longing for something that is lost. The song starts with an image of someone lying on the carpet trying to numb their pain. The next line, “impermanence in your vein” refers to the fleeting nature of life that is experienced in a single moment. The verse goes on to say that summer is running through the everglades and rounding up the daisy chains which signifies the passage of time.

The chorus suggests that everything that we give is all that we have, and we must make the best of it. The following verses talk about how we build relationships and change our lives, yet we are still held captive to the forces of change. The line, “the stations ever passing by your train” conveys a sense of loss and missed opportunities. The bridge of the song is surreal, filled with images of sidewalks moving slowly like an escalator in the brickwork of a tailor, and the skyline is a hummingbird trading poems for a crossword. In the end, the song concludes that life is an infantile playing in between the changing seasons, and we must embrace the change that is inherent in it.
