Hailing from the isle of O’ahu, Makana—whose name means “a gift given freely”—began singing when he was 7 years old, took up ‘ukulele at 9 and began learning the ancient art of slack key at 11. By 14, he was already performing professionally, and before long playing four nights a week. His reputation as the youngest master of slack key spread like molten volcanic lava throughout the islands. With each successive year, more and more music fans—both on and outside of the islands—are experiencing the Makana phenomenon. In addition to his own headlining tours, Makana has opened shows for the likes of Sting, Santana, Elvis Costello, Paul Rodgers, Chris Isaak, No Doubt, Jason Mraz, and Jack Johnson, and in 2008 he won 2nd runner-up in Guitar Player Magazine’s National "Guitar Superstar" Competition.

Makana Lyrics

Directing the waves to the sand
The crown on the valley is glowing
Reflecting the fire on the land
Over the shoreline it lingers
Hearing the ocean's roar
Touching the trees with its fingers
When the stream runs down in the pouring rain
Joining the crest to the sea
They say the gods will unite again
How can they not be free
How can they not be free
Up to the sky it races
Lifting the birds with its wing
Knowing the valley it graces
Was once such a living thing
Down to the heart of creation
Feeling the mountain burn
It whispers a short invocation
May the clouds return
For the stream runs down in the pouring rain
Joining the crest to the sea
They say the gods will unite again
How can they not be free
How can they not be free
When the stream runs down in the pouring rain
Joining the crest to the sea
They say the gods will unite again
How can they not be free
How can they not be free
The lyrics of Makana's "Reunion" speak of a powerful natural force that is sweeping through a town, a valley, and the surrounding land. The wind is blowing and directing waves to the sand, while the crown on the valley is glowing and reflecting the fire on the land. This force is watching over everything, hearing the ocean's roar and touching the trees with its fingers, as it sees the shadows of war.
The lyrics suggest that this force has the power to unite the gods again, and the song speaks of a stream that runs down in the pouring rain, joining the crest to the sea. They say that this is when the gods will return and be free. The song suggests that the power of nature and the gods can bring people together and help them overcome the conflicts that divide them.
