1) Malaika LeR… Read Full Bio ↴There are several musicians and bands called Malaika.
1) Malaika LeRae Sallard, an R&B and house music artist who released the album Sugar Time in 1993. The album produced two hits on the Billboard Dance Charts - "So Much Love" (#5) and "Gotta Know (Your Name)" (#1).
2) A well known group is the South African. Afro-pop trio Malaika consisting of Jabulani Herald Ndaba, Matshediso Florence Mholo and Bongani Kevin Nchang. It was conceived with an inalienable contribution of one of South Africa’s most under-utilised producers of Kwaito Godfrey “Guffy” Pilane.
Malaika testifies to the power of three: the trio, generally possessing peerless elemental power in the history of pop music, consists of Bongani Nchanga, Jabu Ndaba, both battle-weary and hardened former original band members of the Stouters, and Tshedi Mholo, an innocent, church-going, unspoilt debutante former school teacher in the music world. For in the Stouters, with the accent on kwaito, Nchanga and Ndaba were decent boys trying to fit into something they were clearly not. And, accordingly, as fate would have it, they would not succeed. But, in a strange way, the duo was saved by this apparent failure of gold-cast, thunder-and-lightening awe voices of Nchanga and Ndaba. For, doubtlessly licking their pride at seeing lesser talented contemporaries raking the kudos and cash flow, they would go back to their roots to find themselves in the church where singing had always been part of their lives. Here the two discovered the astonishing heavenly voice of Mholo.
Appropriately, because Malaika, an Afro-pop band, that is, a perfect blend of post-kwaito, post-mbaqanga and neo-soul, that is the quintessence of Nu Afro-pop, unashamedly melodic, harmonious, always attempting to be soulful, a good dollop of singing and musicianship, along with one or two of their contemporaries, defines the early sound of 21st century South Africa. It’s a band that has, as Nu Afro-pop took its cue from late 70s to late 80s Afro-pop, moulded English back into the mix of a black pop a la bands of the late 20th century South Africa did.
Unfortunately , Jabu Ndaba has passed away

Don't think that I can love anyone more than I have loved you
No no, we knew, we knew
From the first day that we met we clicked, so well
cnd i can't lie cause last year what we've had, s'been hell
You went for that low fruit
The ones that hang
Way way way way down
I don't even know you
Your starting to fade
I can't hold you
Way way way way down
Uh uh, nuh uh
The low ones start to fall off
Had to let you go
I don't even love you
I don't feel the same
You're bringing me
Way way way way way down
When I think of yuh
cll I duh
Is hold on to memories
Of the way things used to be
When I look at you
S'like I never knew
I was out of your reach
Higher fruit in the tree
So sad so sad naw
Thought I was talkin to dat guy
I never cheated on you
I was still rollin wit you
Caught up in your insecurities
You keep on trynna make
Sure that he's not mine not mine
Naw naw
You can't have it all
So you pick the low fruit
To cover the pain
The ones that hang
Way way way way down
I don't even know you
Your starting to fade
I can't hold you
Way, way, way, way down
Uh uh, nuh uh
The low ones start to fall off
Had to let you go
I don't even love you
I don't feel the same
Your bringing me
Way, way, way, way, way down
I wish, you would
Let me go, let me go
I wish, you would
Let me go, let me go
Don't fuck wit that low fruit
To cover the pain
The ones that hang
Way, way, way, way down
I don't even know you
Your starting to fade
I can't hold you
Way way, way, way down
Uh uh, nuh uh
The low ones start to fall off
Had to let you go
I don't even love you
I don't feel the same
You're bringing me
Way, way, way, way, down
In the end I pray
That you will find your way
cnd you move on from this
Cause I'm done with this shit

The lyrics of Malaika's song "Low Fruit" describe a relationship that was once intense and deeply loving, but has now become painful and burdensome. The singer expresses their unconditional love for their partner, claiming they have never loved anyone else as much. However, they acknowledge that both parties in the relationship were aware of the difficulties they faced.
The song highlights how the relationship started off strong, with an instant connection between the singer and their partner. However, the past year has been difficult, implying that the relationship has been plagued with problems and challenges. This is metaphorically represented by the mention of "low fruit," which symbolizes the singer's partner seeking temporary and easy solutions to numb the pain they are experiencing.
The singer is beginning to feel disconnected from their partner, as indicated by lines such as "I don't even know you" and "You're starting to fade." The partner's actions and behavior are causing the singer to feel weighed down and unable to hold on to the relationship any longer. The repetition of "way way way way down" emphasizes the depth of the emotional turbulence the singer is experiencing.
The second verse reveals that the singer has remained faithful to their partner, despite the insecurities and mistrust present in the relationship. However, the partner's continuous doubts and attempts to keep the singer for themselves highlights their possessiveness and inability to accept the possibility of the singer's fidelity. The singer expresses their frustrations, making it clear that their partner cannot have control over everything in their life.
In the chorus, the repetition of "way way way way down" and the plea for their partner to let go emphasizes the emotional toll the relationship has taken on the singer. They are tired of holding on to something that no longer brings them the same joy and love. They assert that they don't even love their partner anymore and that they need to be released from the pain of the relationship.
The song concludes with the singer expressing their desire for their partner to find their own path and move on from their toxic relationship. They assert that they are done with the pain and negativity, symbolizing their willingness to let go and move on from the relationship. The phrase "No more no more" reinforces their decisive stance in ending this chapter of their life.
Overall, "Low Fruit" delves into the complexities of a deteriorating relationship and the emotional toll it takes on the individuals involved. It explores themes of love, pain, and the need for self-preservation and growth.
