The group made itself known in 2004 with the release of its first album, "Le Compte Complet." Critics welcomed the disc with positive reviews, which allowed the group to become instantly famous in the Québécois music scene. Several of its songs, such as "Le Métronome" and "La Valérie," were prominent mainstays on several Québec radio stations. For the production of the album, the group turned to Martin Pelland from fellow Montreal band The Dears.
In the months that followed the release of their first album, Malajube launched a tour across Québec, participating in several major festivals, such as Les FrancoFolies de Montréal.
In February 2006, the quartet released its sophomore album, Trompe-l’œil, which also received a warm welcome on the part of Québec media. Collaborations with singer Pierre Lapointe, Québecois rap group Loco Locass, and the use of a wide variety of instruments has contributed to the album's success. Trompe-l'œil also began to attract attention in English Canada in July, when it was shortlisted for the inaugural Polaris Music Prize, and in the United States in October, when it was a featured review on Pitchfork Media. In 2006, they won three Félix Award at the 28th edition of the Gala de l'ADISQ: two for Trompe-l’œil, "Best alternative album" and "Best cover art" while they were proclaimed "Revelation of the year 2006".
Their third album, Labyrinthes, was released on February 10th 2009.
Their song "Montreal -40° C" was featured in a Rogers Wireless commercial, and Ton Plat Favori was in a Zellers commercial.
La Valérie
Malajube Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ça me dépasse, j'comprend rien,
Ça me fait mal et ça passe,
Mais cette fois pauvre crétin
...J'entends ses pas au plafond,
Je dois faire vite,
Je dois me rendre ou me tirer d'ici,
J'aimerais lui tendre un piège
Et lui faire mal,
Comme dans mes rêves les plus jouissants
In Malajube's song La Valérie, the singer expresses his confusion and anger towards people who are cruel enough to harm and murder others for their own desire of sex or money. The lyrics mention how the singer cannot comprehend the mind of such individuals and their actions. However, the singer also states that this time the perpetrator will have to pay for their crime. The lyrics get darker when the singer mentions hearing the perpetrator's footsteps, and that he has to act fast to either turn himself in or escape. The singer even admits to having violent fantasies about hurting the perpetrator.
The song exposes the issues of violence and criminal activities present in society. The lyrics show the singer's horror and helplessness towards the violence and the innocence of the victims. The song can be interpreted as a call to action, to put an end to violence and criminal activities, and to do something about it.

Mais quand je pense qu'il y a du monde
It's hard for me to understand that there are people so stupid and cruel
So stupid that they would chop up humans into pieces
And put those pieces into a hockey bag
Pour du sexe ou du cash.
Either for sex or money
Ça me dépasse, j'comprend rien,
It's beyond my comprehension, I don't understand anything
Ça me fait mal et ça passe,
It hurts me, but the pain will pass
Mais cette fois pauvre crétin
But this time you poor idiot
Tu paieras pour ton crime
You will pay for your crime
...J'entends ses pas au plafond,
...I hear his steps on the ceiling
Je dois faire vite,
I have to act quickly
Je dois me rendre ou me tirer d'ici,
I have to surrender or get out of here
J'aimerais lui tendre un piège
I want to trap him
Et lui faire mal,
And hurt him
Comme dans mes rêves les plus jouissants
As in my most satisfying dreams

Godspeed Malajube fan.
