El Barzon
Maldita Vecindad Lyrics

Las sembré con un buey pando
Se me reventó el barzón
Y sigue la yunta andando
Cuando llegué a media tierra
El arado iba enterrado
Se enteró hasta la telera
El yugo se iba pandeando
El barzón iba rozando
El sembrador me iba hablando
Yo le dije al sembrador
"No me hable cuando ande arando"
Se me reventó el barzón
Y sigue la yunta andando
Cuando acabé de pizcar
Vino el rico y lo partió
Todo mi maíz se llevó
Ni pa' comer me dejó
Me presenta aquí la cuenta
"Aquí debes 20 pesos
De la renta de unos bueyes
5 pesos de magueyes
Una nega tres cuartillas
Del frijol que te prestamos
Una nega tres cuartillas
Del maíz que te limitamos
5 pesos de unas fundas
7 pesos de cigarros
6 pesos no sé de qué
Pero todo está en la cuenta
A más de los 20 reales
Que sacaste de la tienda
Cuanto del maíz que te toca
No le pagas a la hacienda
Pero cuentas con mi tierra
Para seguirla sembrando
Ora vete a trabajar
Pa' que sigas abonando"
Nomás me quedé pensando
Sacudiendo mi cobija
Haciendo mi cigarro de hoja
"Que patrón tan sinvergüenza
Todo mi maíz se llevó
Para su maldita troje"
Se me reventó el barzón
Y sigue la yunta andando
Se me reventó el barzón
Y sigue la yunta andando
Cuando llegué a mi casita
Me decía mi prenda amada
"¿Ontá el maíz que te tocó?"
Le contesté yo muy triste:
"El patrón se lo llevó
Por lo que debía en la hacienda
Pero me dijo el patrón
Que contará con la tierra
Para seguirla sembrando
Ora voy a trabajar
Para seguirle abonando
20 pesos 10 centavos
Más lo que salgo restando"
Me decía mi prenda amada
"No trabajes con ese hombre
Nomás te está robando
Anda al salón de sesiones
Que te lleve mi compadre
Ya no le hagas caso al padre
Él y sus excomuniones
Qué no ves a tu familia
Que ya no tiene calzones
Ni yo tengo ya faldilla
Ni tu tienes pantalones"
Nomás me quedé pensando
Pue' que deje a mi patrón
Me decía mi prenda amada
"Que vaya el patrón al cuerno
Como estuviéramos de hambre
Si te has de seguir creyendo
Lo que dicen en los medios
Pura manipulación
Y mentiras del gobierno
En el campo está el patrón
Los finqueros y asociados
Guardias blancas y matones
Nomás explotando pueblos
Van secando nuestra tierra
Y allá en las ciudades
Los políticos corruptos
Los mafiosos y banqueros
Nomás chupando la sangre
A la gente, a los obreros
Es por eso que zapata
Ahora cabalga de nuevo
La revolución civil
Viva el autogobierno"
Se me reventó el barzón
Y sigue la yunta andando
Y sigue la yunta andando
The song El Barzon by Maldita Vecindad tells a story about the struggles of a farmer who is exploited and oppressed by his landowner. The first stanza creates a vivid image of the farmer working hard on his land with his ox, but then the yoke strap (barzón) breaks and the ox continues to move forward. This metaphorically represents the farmer's struggles and difficulties, but he keeps pushing forward.
The second stanza describes the injustice that the farmer experiences when the landowner takes all his corn and gives him a long list of debts to pay. Even worse, the landowner offers to let the farmer continue to use his land, but he must work to pay the debts rather than being paid for his labor. The farmer's partner offers him some advice and tells him to stand up against the oppressors of the working class.
Overall, El Barzon is a political and social commentary on the struggles of the farming class and their political oppressors. The song uses vivid imagery to convey the tough conditions that farmers face and encourages them to stand up against those who exploit them.

Pero cuentas con mi tierra
But you can keep using my land
Para seguirla sembrando
As long as you keep planting on it
Ora vete a trabajar
Now go to work
Pa' que sigas abonando"
So you can keep paying back what you owe
Nomás me quede pensando
The singer is left thinking
Sacudiendo mi cobija
Wrapping themselves in a blanket in deep thought
Haciendo mi cigarro de hoja
Rolling a cigarette from a leaf
"Que patrón tan sinvergüenza
What a shameless boss
Todo mi maíz se llevó
Taking all the corn
Para su maldita troje"
Storing it in their warehouse
Cuando llegué a mi casita
Upon returning home
Me decía mi prenda amada
The artist's significant other says
"¿Ontá el maíz que te tocó?"
"Where is the corn you were supposed to get?"
Le contesté yo muy triste:
The artist responds with sadness
"El patrón se lo llevó
The boss took it all
Por lo que debía en la hacienda
Because of a debt related to the land
Pero me dijo el patrón
But the boss told me
"Que contará con la tierra
"That I can still use the land
Para seguirla sembrando
As long as I keep planting on it
Ora voy a trabajar
Now I'm going to work
Para seguirle abonando
To keep paying back what I owe
20 pesos 10 centavos
20 pesos and 10 cents
Más lo que salgo restando"
Plus whatever is leftover
Me decía mi prenda amada
The artist's significant other then says
"No trabajes con ese hombre
"Don't work for that man
Nomás nostá robando
He's just stealing from us
Anda al salón de sesiones
Go to government meetings
Que te lleve mi compadre
My friend will take you
Ya no le hagas caso al padre
Stop listening to the boss
Él y sus excomuniones
He thinks he has power over people
Qué no ves a tu familia
Don't you see your family
Que ya no tiene calzones
Who no longer have pants to wear
Ni yo tengo ya faldilla
Nor do I have a skirt
Ni tu tienes pantalones"
Nor do you have pants
Nomás me quede pensando
The singer is left thinking
Pue' que deje a mi patrón
Should I leave my boss?
Me decía mi prenda amada
The significant other responds
"Que vaya el patrón al cuerno
Tell the boss to go to hell
Como estuviéramos de hambre
We are starving
Si te has de seguir creyendo
If you keep believing
Lo que dicen en los medios
What is said in the media
Pura manipulación
It's all manipulation
Y mentiras del gobierno
And lies from the government
En el campo está el patrón
The boss is out in the fields
Los finqueros y asociados
The landowners and their associates
Guardias blancas y matones
Police and hired thugs
Nomás explotando pueblos
Exploiting the poor people
Van secando nuestra tierra
They are drying out our land
Y allá en las ciudades
And in the cities
Los policías corruptos
The corrupt police
Los mafiosos y banqueros
The mobsters and bankers
Nomás chupando la sange
Sucking the life out of the people
A la gente, a los obreros
The everyday people and workers
Es por eso que zapata
That's why Zapata
Ahora cabalga de nuevo
Is riding again
La revolución civil
The civil revolution
Viva el autogobierno"
Long live self-government
Se me reventó el barzón
The plow's equipment broke
Y sigue la yunta andando
But the ox and plow continue moving forward
