Hero
Mamalarky Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can count on one hand the times I've been alone
With you project dreams of you into daytime
Shatter glass dear caught in powerful headlights
I can't unseen the truth but I believe

Ooo you are my hero
Here only for the stories I
Tell myself when I am unwell

Fabricated playground spend most my days in
Chasing a version of you unreal and ever unjaded
Figments can convince that it is the end of days
I wipe eyes so I can see

Ooo you are my hero

Here only for the stories I
Tell myself when I am unwell

Overall Meaning

In the song "Hero" by Mamalarky, the lyrics delve into themes of dependency, delusion, and the need for a hero figure. The opening lines, "I can count on one hand the times I've been alone / With you project dreams of you into daytime," suggest a sense of reliance on another person. The singer admits that they rarely spend time alone, instead projecting their fantasies of this person into their everyday life. It could be interpreted that this person gives them a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

The following lines, "Shatter glass dear caught in powerful headlights / I can't unseen the truth but I believe," convey a feeling of being trapped or exposed. It seems as though the singer has had a revelation about this person, recognizing their flaws or the harsh reality of the situation, but still choosing to believe in them. There is a sense of being blinded by love or infatuation.

Moving into the chorus, the lyrics state, "Ooo you are my hero / Here only for the stories I / Tell myself when I am unwell." Here, the notion of a hero becomes apparent. The singer sees this person as their hero, someone who can save them from their own troubles or insecurities. However, it is also implied that this hero figure only exists in their own stories and imagination. They rely on the idea of this person to provide comfort and escape when they are feeling unwell or distressed.

In the second verse, the lyrics continue to explore the theme of chasing an idealized version of this person, stating, "Fabricated playground spend most my days in / Chasing a version of you unreal and ever unjaded." The singer admits that they spend most of their time in a fabricated world, pursuing an idealized version of this person who is always perfect and untouched by the harsh realities of life. This further emphasizes the delusional nature of their infatuation.

The final lines, "Figments can convince that it is the end of days / I wipe eyes so I can see," suggest that the singer realizes the illusions they have created can make them believe that everything is falling apart. Despite this, they continue to wipe their eyes, perhaps in an attempt to regain clarity and see the truth.

Overall, "Hero" explores the ideas of dependency, delusion, and the need for a hero figure, highlighting the power that our own imagination and projections can have in shaping our perceptions.

The bassist and the lead guitar/vocals played to support faye webster last year on pitchfork. As soon as I saw them I knew they had something going on, I searched a bit and found out that they actually had their own band. So glad I trusted my guts on that hahaha, their album is soooo goood, and the live versions even better! 😍
