What You See Is What You Get
Man.Machine.Industry Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And you've got nowhere to go
And there's nowhere for you to be
You are not alone
When you feel like you're in a rut
And you should've kept your eyes shut
And you should have stayed at home
You're not the only one
When you feel like you're out your hole
And your over the love on the dole
And you see the world for what it is
And you feel like crawling back in
Cause it doesn't feel like it used to
Maybe I'm just growing old
It's colder on the surface
It's warmer in my hole
And are you really happy?
Tell me are you really happy?
What's it feel like to be happy?
Freedom? Is that what you call freedom?
Yeah you can keep it
Yeah you can keep it
Yes you can keep it
The lyrics of Man.Machine.Industry's song, "What You See Is What You Get," delve into themes of despair, disillusionment, and the longing for freedom. The song opens with a sense of hopelessness and feeling trapped in a hole, metaphorically representing a state of despair and lack of direction. The lyrics suggest that despite feeling alone and stuck, there is solace in knowing that others share similar experiences.
The next verse explores the consequences of not heeding one's intuition. It suggests that when faced with difficult situations, we often ignore our instincts and end up regretting our decisions. This can lead to a feeling of being stuck in a rut, questioning our choices, and wishing we had stayed in our comfort zones. The lyrics emphasize that these struggles are universal and that we are not the only ones going through them.
The mention of freedom in the chorus brings a critical perspective to the concept. It questions whether what we commonly associate with freedom truly brings happiness and fulfillment. The lyrics imply a disillusionment with the idea of freedom, and the repetition of "you can keep it" suggests a rejection of societal expectations and norms that don't bring genuine happiness. It implies that true freedom might lie in finding contentment within oneself, rather than relying on external factors or societal constructs.
The final verse adds another layer to the song's theme. It depicts a realization that as one steps out of their metaphorical hole, they begin to see the world for what it truly is, without the illusion or delusion that previously clouded their perception. However, this newfound clarity doesn't necessarily bring joy or satisfaction. The lyrics ponder whether growing older and gaining wisdom might actually make life colder and more isolating. The contrast between the surface and the hole suggests that retreat and introspection might be preferable to facing the harsh realities of the world.
In summary, "What You See Is What You Get" explores themes of despair, regret, disillusionment, and the quest for true freedom and happiness. It reflects on feeling trapped, making decisions that lead to dissatisfaction, and questioning the nature of freedom itself. The lyrics suggest that finding peace within oneself and rejecting societal expectations may be the key to experiencing genuine fulfillment.
