Head On
Man Man Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a knock at your door
You don't even recognize the stranger
It's you from before
Tryin' to warn you all about the dangers
There's a hole in your head
At least that's what everybody's guessing
It's why you're always misread
It's why you sleep but you never feel rested
You never get your rest in

Hold on to your heart
Hold it high above flood waters,
Hold on to your heart,
Never let nobody drag it under.
Hold on to your heart
Even when your body's bitter
Hold on to your heartt
Never let nobody take it over
Ever take it over
Ever take it over from you.

There's a call on the phone
You don't even recognize the number,
It's an old episode,
Of trying to put the lightening on the monster,
Of the life you have led,
That is always a mess
Are you dreaming of death
Are there ghosts in your chest,
Are you always so restless, yes you are
Is that hard?

Hold on to your heart
Hold it high above flood waters,
Hold on to your heart,
Never let nobody drag it under.
Hold on to your heart
Even when your body's bitter
Hold on to your heart
Never let nobody take it over
Ever take it over
Ever take it over from you.

Is it all a game
But bait and switch up your brains
And follow your leaders to hell
Is it all the same, in vein of insane,
As drinking from a poisoned well
And I need new skin for this old skeleton of mine
'Cause this one that I'm in
Let me down once again
I'm over time,
And I need new skin for this old skeleton of mine
'Cause this one that I'm in
Let me down once again
I'm over time.

Hold on to your heart
Hold it high above flood waters,
Hold on to your heart,
Never let nobody drag it under.
Hold on to your heart
Even when the whole world's bitter
Hold on to your heart
Never let nobody take it over
Ever take it over, ever take it over
Ever take it over, ever take it over

Ever take it over
Ever take it over from you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Man Man's song "Head On" explore the concept of self-preservation and the importance of guarding one's heart during difficult times. The opening lines introduce the idea of a stranger knocking on the door. However, it soon becomes clear that this stranger is actually a version of the singer's past self, trying to warn them about the dangers that lie ahead. The reference to a hole in the singer's head and the fact that they never feel rested suggests that they are struggling with some kind of mental health issue. The chorus serves as a reminder to hold onto one's heart, even when faced with adversity.

The second verse reveals that the singer is haunted by their past, represented by an old episode that they cannot forget. They are struggling with their own mortality and may be experiencing symptoms of anxiety, such as restlessness and trouble sleeping. The bridge of the song questions whether life is just a game, likening it to drinking from a poisoned well. The singer expresses a desire for a fresh start and a new lease on life, symbolized by the idea of "new skin for this old skeleton."

Overall, "Head On" is a powerful song about self-care, resilience, and the importance of protecting oneself, both physically and emotionally. The lyrics are open to interpretation, but they suggest that the singer has experienced trauma in the past and is struggling to cope with the present. The song encourages listeners to hold onto their hearts, even when faced with adversity, and offers hope that it is always possible to start over and find a way to heal.

About 6 or 7 years ago I had just graduated from college, was working a job I hated, driving 45 minutes to an hour one way, oftentimes through the snow in my crappy '97 Aerostar van. I used to get off work around 2 AM and the radio station I would listen to would inevitably play this song on my way home. I always felt at peace listening to this on a quiet night. I get nostalgic for those days for some reason, especially when I hear this song.

@spacebass79g98

Definitely does that to me too!

@Dr.JeremyDunks

I was so proud of these guys for this. I'd been following them since they were doing tiny gigs in the mid 00s in art galleries. And then they charted with this one.

@ronster369

I'm a sudden newcomer to the band. I was 12 years late to the party with Vampire Weekend. Now I find myself 17 years too late to the party with these guys. I'm starting at the beginning and am already finding gems I missed. Falling in love with Gold Teeth at the moment.....And if not for Head On, I might have missed them completely.
