Monster
Man Man Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The monsters over my shoulder
Whispering sour nothings
It disappears to the shadows
Warns me of the storm that is coming
Try as I might despite my fright
What I know to be wrong feels so right
Hold you have over my soul has taken over control
I just went to get back
To be or not to be from your spell over me
With some pieces intact
Try to say goodbye before one of us dies
Ain't going out like that
Must make these chains collapse and break
Forsake my fate of relapse
The monsters taken full control
I see him in my reflection
We know actions have consequences
But agreed they would never be mentioned
Just pretend we are friends to the bitter end
Or the worst whichever comes first
As we toil in the mortal coil
I envy part of me that used to be free
The hold you have over my soul has taken over control
I just went to get back
To be or not to be from your spell over me
With some pieces intact
Must try to say goodbye before one of us dies
Ain't going out like that

I must make these chains collapse and break
Forsake my fate of relapse

Overall Meaning

In Man Man's song Monster, the singer is haunted by the presence of a monster, and is struggling to resist its hold over them. The opening lines, "the monsters over my shoulder, whispering sour nothings," suggest that the monster represents the singer's negative thoughts or internal demons. Despite their fear, the singer is drawn towards the monster, as "what I know to be wrong feels so right." This could be interpreted as a reflection of a self-destructive behavior or addiction that the singer is struggling to overcome.

Throughout the song, the singer battles with their internal conflict, trying to find a way to break free from the monster's hold. The line "the hold you have over my soul has taken over control" illustrates how the singer feels powerless in the face of the monster's influence. However, they are determined to break free and regain control of their life, as they sing "I must make these chains collapse and break, forsake my fate of relapse." The song ends on a somewhat ambiguous note - either we must try to say goodbye before one of us dies, or we must pretend we are friends to the bitter end. Both suggest a difficult journey to come, but also a glimmer of hope that the singer will ultimately find a way to overcome their monster.

- i think one of the most frightening things about the scene is that it breaks some elements of safety.
- daytime, being in a town with people, having weapons, these are all generally traits not present in horror, and are generally considered to be safe havens.
- but despite that things still go wrong.
- the gun doesn't kill it, the kid isn't safe despite being surrounded by people, and all of it happens when the sun is bright and shining.
- also of course the fact that the kid loses their face and not even a minute later their entire body.
