Technically he didn't do anything besides telling Enterprise to beam the two up. If anything it's Sulu that saved Kirk from that Romulan earlier.

+theenigmaticmrwu In principle, it shouldn't. If you're just grabbing the molecules that make up the person and are replacing them somewhere else, you should be just fine in regards to speed. That being said, there was an episode of DS9 that involved a gun that could see/shoot through walls because it transported the bullet after it was fired so... really I have no clue.

+theenigmaticmrwu I'd guess the velocity as they were falling was only influenced by that particular planet's gravitational pull. Assuming that the sudden change in gravitational field the moment they entered the transportation room is the reason they came in (or out) in one piece.

It's a Russian exclamation. It's pretty versatile, so it's hard to put one meaning to it, but in this situation it could be used as "Oh my gosh!" or "Amazing!" I think the audience laughed because Chekov is so friggin adorable.

I really love the transporter effects out of this movie and its sequel. The annular beams actually look like they give off light that affects their surroundings, and the effect looks three dimensional rather than some 2D sparklies superimposed over a cross fade.

This scene debunks the nonsense about Kirk being "too cocky" and having "no redeeming quality's". The guy didn't hesitate to jump after Sulu. It also shows that Kirk will take risk to achieve his task and save lives, even if his own is in danger.

To the transfer of velocity speculation, I submit the possibility that that is what Chekov is dealing with when he says "compensating for gravitational pull." For the rest of the video: I love this scene! Chekov's adorable awesomeness (or vice versa), Kirk's heroic reckless for a stranger, and of course, his hilarious "Beam. Us. UP!"

Just noticed that when he said "compensating for gravitational pull" he meant that he needed to beam them up and take away their momentum otherwise they'd just get teleported, and immediately splat on the floor, dying anyway.

Nothing to do with that....; it was to be able to lock on to them while they were falling. There is no reason to think their bodies would still be moving after transport...; so, even them hitting the floor seemed unneeded, IMO

Probably my biggest pet peeve with JJ Trek was how they handled transporters. Like they can't beam somebody up while they're falling, but they can beam somebody onto a moving ship? The worst part is when Spock's mother died. Like they have to be perfectly still, even though the Transporters a hundred years earlier on Enterprise could beam somebody up while they're running. I think they could have found other ways to make things dramatic.

It's funny how when someone were to be beamed out of and back aboard the ship, it takes like 6 seconds, but when Kirk and Zulu got beamed back, it took like 1 second.

The difference is that there was a black hole actively ripping the planet apart when Spock's mother fell, which wasn't happening when Kirk and Sulu were falling, and when they were falling it was a /long/ long way down, while Spock's mother had a rather short, but lethal fall.

Another way it could have worked is if the Enterprise itself had some velocity in the direction that Sulu and Kirk were falling, in which case their relative velocity would be slow enough for them to survive the fall. I mean, a ship that can create artificial gravity can do pretty much whatever it wants as far as applying forces in the people inside it.

They used the drill to put the red matter bomb far enough underground that the resulting black hole wouldn't evaporate due to lack of matter feeding in to it. Remember that everything changed as soon as Nero traveled back in time. The building of the enterprise could have been done in honor of Kirk's father sacrifice.

Yes they hit the floor of the transporter deck. What Trackboy means is that with the laws of physics, at the speed and height they were falling from the amount of force they had should have been enough to splatter them across said transporter deck after being transported. The only way this is avoided is if the transporter removed that force before reappearing inside the ship.

Kirk was transported in a similar way and style in Star Trek Beyond too. Scotty beamed them and this time it was him grabbing Jayla instead of Sulu as they're being transported and falling hard again onto the transporter floor of the Franklin like they did here on the Enterprise..haha

I also forgot to mention that time travel was a staple in ST8 as well. So this is the 4th ST film which uses an exhausted plot device. So if you tally up the bits that make up ST 2009, we get revenge (WOK), Red Matter (proto matter from SFS), Time travel (used 3 other times) Destruction of a planet (SFS) and a Romulan planet-killing megaship (N). Star Trek 2009 is a Frankenstein's Monster of cobbled together parts of previous films.

The reason the red matter was dropped on the core was to assure the planets complete destruction without allowing the vulcans to escape. Remember the jammer due to the drill? Sure it may have been done different albeit with different results, but its not a plotbreaking plothole that can be even seen in the good Star Trek movie. Refer to my previous comment.

just a nitpick but shouldn't kirk and sulu hit the floor of the enterprise with the same force as they would from the initial fall itself where did that extra kinetic energy go.
