Mandolin Orange’s music radiates a mysterious warmth —their songs feel like whispered secrets, one hand cupped to your ear. The North Carolina duo have built a steady and growing fanbase with this kind of intimacy, and on Tides of A Teardrop, due out February 1, it is more potent than ever. By all accounts, it is the duo’s fullest, richest, and most personal effort. You can hear the air between them—the taut space of shared understanding, as palpable as a magnetic field, that makes their music sound like two halves of an endlessly completing thought. Singer-songwriter Andrew Marlin and multi-instrumentalist Emily Frantz have honed this lamp glow intimacy for years.
In the last three years, the group has toured throughout the U.S and Europe, including appearances at Austin City Limits, South by Southwest, Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Pickathon, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Rooster Walk, and MerleFest and the Omagh Bluegrass Festival. Mandolin Orange was the featured artist on CBS This Morning's Saturday Morning Sessions on December 7, 2019.
They signed to Yep Roc Records in 2013 and have produced four albums under their umbrella, This Side Of Jordan, Such Jubilee, Blindfaller and Tides of a Teardrop.
INTO THE SUN
Mandolin Orange Lyrics

Buried so deep
In a lifetime of memories
And the love I keep
Turnin' within me
While the sake is my name
Pours forth the only
And calls me on
Into the sun
Onward
Into the sun
Just a bird with a broken wing
Longing to fly
They've stretched every highway
This poor boy could drive
At home with the grounded
I found a way
'Cross the plains and north mountains
Back again
Onward
Into the sun
Ain't I got a fortune
In nearing my end
When I think of my family
And all of my friends
But the highway is empty
My keys handed in
I've mended my broken wing
My soul it begins
To call me on
Into the sun
Onward
Into the sun
Onward
Into the sun
Onward
"Into the Sun" is a song that speaks of the realization that riches go far beyond material possessions. The opening lines “Ain't I got a fortune/Buried so deep/In a lifetime of memories/And the love I keep” set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer recognizes that their true fortune lies in the memories they’ve made and the love they’ve experienced throughout their life. As the song progresses, the singer experiences a sort of awakening, realizing that they have been grounded far too long and it’s time to pursue their desires. “Just a bird with a broken wing/Longing to fly/They've stretched every highway/This poor boy could drive,” expressing a desire to break free and venture out to chase their happiness.
Throughout the song, the singer has a sense of urgency as they recognize that they're nearing the end of their life. They talk about their family and friends, and the importance they hold in their life, but they also understand that their journey is not over yet. “But the highway is empty/My keys handed in/I've mended my broken wing/My soul it begins/To call me on" symbolizes the singer letting go of past limitations and finally beginning their journey, as their soul calls them onward, into the sun.
Overall, "Into the Sun" speaks to the human experience of realizing that we cannot rely on external things to bring us true happiness, and that sometimes it takes recognizing the value of our past and present experiences to truly move forward and chase our dreams.
