Move On
Mandy Patinkin & Bernadette Peters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are you working on something new?
No.
That is not like you, George.
I′ve nothing to say--
You have many things
Well, nothing that's not been said--
Said by you, though, George
I do not know where to go
And nor did I
I want to make things that count,
Things that will be new...
I did what I had to do...
What am I to do?
Move on...
Stop worrying where you′re going
Move on
If you can know where you're going
You've gone
Just keep moving on
I chose, and my world was shaken
So what?
The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not
You have to move on.
Look at what you want,
Not at where you are,
Not at what you′ll be
Look at all the things you′ve done for me
Opened up my eyes,
Taught me how to see,
Notice every tree--
Notice every tree...
Understand the light--
Understand the light...
Concentrate on now--
I want to move on
I want to explore the light
I want to know how to get through,
Through to something new,
Something of my own
Move on
Move on
Stop worrying if your vision is new
Let others make that decision
They usually do
You keep moving on
Look at what you've done / Something in the light,
Then at what you want / Something in the sky,
Not at where you are/ In the grass,
Where you′ll be / Up behind the trees...
Look at all the things you gave to me / Things I hadn't looked at till now
Let me give to you / Flower in your hat.
Something in return
And your smile
I would be so pleased / And the color of your hair.
And the way you catch the light
And the care
And the feeling
And the life
Moving on
We′ve always belonged together!
We will always belong together!
Just keep moving on.
Anything you do
Let it come from you

Then it will be new
Give us more to see...

Overall Meaning

The song "Move On" is from the Stephen Sondheim musical "Sunday in the Park with George". It depicts a conversation between the characters George and Dot, who were modeled after famous artist Georges Seurat and his mistress. In this conversation, George expresses his frustration with his lack of inspiration for a new painting, while Dot encourages him to move on and keep creating.

The opening lines of the song indicate the creative block that George is facing. Dot tries to motivate him by reminding him of his talent and encouraging him to make something new. However, George is fixated on the fact that everything has already been said before. This leads to a feeling of being lost and not knowing where to go, both artistically and personally. Dot suggests that the only way to move forward is to let go of the worry and uncertainties and focus on the present moment, using past experiences as inspiration to create something new.

The song emphasizes the importance of resilience, persistence, and a desire for personal growth. It encourages the listener to concentrate on their own path and not be dissuaded by the judgments and opinions of others. It asserts that everyone possesses a unique perspective and that this can be channeled creatively to create something new.

"Anything you do, let it come from you. Then it will be new. Give us more to see." RIP Stephen, and thank you for giving us more to see for all these years ❤

To me, this is Sondheim's masterpiece. It truly is a one of a kind masterpiece. No other musical addresses the worth of the artist, the process, and the beauty of art as much as this show. Brilliantly through-composed not just for the sake of imitating opera, but each minute of music sets a mood. There are no cheap gimmicks here. No awkward pauses for pre-paid jokes by writers who don't care. No juke-box songs. THIS is what a musical should be. Full of heart, soul, and art.

Agree.

Around 1:50 Bernadette Peters' button flashes in the light perfectly in time with the music, right after: "Stop worrying if your vision is new." Nothing beats live performance!

I never "really" understood the meaning of this song until one morning when I was listening to it on headphones as I rode to work. My wife and I had just separated after 24 years of marriage and I had been depressed. After really hearing the song I realized that we were both moving on, and that we were doing so for all the right reasons. What an epiphany! Tears started rolling down my cheeks. And things just seemed to fit together better after that.

I can't believe that someone actually disliked this clip. Mandy and Bernadette at their best. A fabulous and passionate performance from two great artists. If you don't like this you don't like theater.

I came here tonight, not knowing that Stephen Sondheim passed away today. This song has been on my mind and heart yesterday and today. I'm so proud of Stephen as his life seems to have been beautifully lived. He has created so many wonderful works that have brought inspiration, thought, joy, and art into my life and so many others. Rest in peace Stephen as you "move on".

I always come back to this song when I sometimes feel a bit lost and unsure of things and this song always reminds me to keep moving forward and to move on. New and better things honestly await you.

I was lucky enough to see this production on Broadway. I still get tears watching it. What a night of musical theater it was.

Iskandar Umarov

Rest in peace, our maestro. You will be missed.
