Blinded by the Light
Manfred Mann's Earth Band Lyrics
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Madman drummers bummers, Indians in the summer
with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps
With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older
I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasin' sneezin' and wheezin'
The calliope crashed to the ground
The calliope crashed to the ground
But she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Some silicone sister with a manager mister
Told me I got what it takes
She said, "I'll turn you on, sonny, to something strong
Play the song with the funky break"
And go-kart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart
To see if it was safe outside
And little Early-Pearly came by in his curly-wurly
And asked me if I needed a ride
Asked me if I needed a ride
But she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
She got down but she never got tired
She's gonna make it through the night
She's gonna make it through the night
But mama, that's where the fun is
But mama, that's where the fun is
Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun
But mama, that's where the fun is
Some brimstone baritone anticyclone rolling stone
Preacher from the east
Says, "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in it's funny bone
That's where they expect it least"
And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner
Watchin' the young girls dance
And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone
Remindin' him of romance
The calliope crashed to the ground
But she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light (madman drummers bummers, Indians in the summer)
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night (with a teenage diplomat)
Blinded by the light (in the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps)
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night (his way into his hat)
Blinded by the light (with a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older)
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night (I tripped the merry-go-round)
Blinded by the light (with this very unpleasin' sneezin' and wheezin')
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night (the calliope crashed to the ground)
Blinded by the light (now Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot)
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night (and throws his lover in the sand)
Blinded by the light (and some bloodshot forget-me-not said daddy's within earshot)
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night (save the buckshot, turn up the band)
Blinded by the light (some silicone sister with a manager mister)
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night (told me I got what it takes)
Blinded by the light (she said, "I'll turn you on, sonny, to something strong")
She got down, but she never got tired
She's gonna make it through the night

Manfred Mann's Earth Band released a version of the song on their album The Roaring Silence. The song reached #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 on 19 February 1977 and #1 on the Canadian RPM chart the same day. Manfred Mann's Earth Band recording of "Blinded by the Light" is Springsteen's only Number 1 single as a songwriter on the Hot 100.
The song is notable for lead vocalist Chris Thompson's garbled enunciation, especially of the phrase "revved up like a deuce" which has led many fans to interpret it as "wrapped up like a douche". The original Springsteen lyric is neither of the above, instead being "cut loose like a deuce". Springsteen once attributed the popularity of the Manfred Mann version partially to Thompson's enunciation.
A ska version can be found on Springsteen's Live In Dublin album, recorded with the Sessions Band.
Lyrics
Springsteen wrote "Blinded by the Light" after most of the others on Greetings were finished and is also one of the few songs for which Springsteen wrote the words before arranging the music. The song itself contains many lyrical (and therefore obscure) references such as:
* "Madman drummers bummers" - Vinnie "Mad Dog" Lopez, the first drummer in the E Street Band.
* "Indians in the summer" - Bruce's little league baseball team as a child.
* "In the dumps with the mumps" - being sick with the mumps.
* "Boulder on my shoulder" - a "chip" on his shoulder.
* "Some all hot, half-shot, heading for a hot spot, snapping fingers clapping his hands" - Being a "know it all kid growing up, who doesn't really know anything."

@Tony Ferriere Agreed. In 1977 I was in 3rd grade and this was my favorite song. I would cry if the radio played the short version because of this guitar solo. Too bad every time they play it live the solo is completely different no matter who the guitarist is.

Maybe this sounds weird, maybe I’m a pussy.. whatever you want to call it...
I turned 17 on October 11th, 2020. Every time I hear this song I want to break down crying. My dad was born in the 60s, so naturally, I grew up surrounded by classic rock. This was one of his favorite songs, I heard it constantly on the radio. It reminds me of all the childhood truck rides with him. I lost my dad to suicide in 2013. Now that I’m almost an adult, it’s getting so much harder rather than easier. I miss him more than ever. All I have left is the music he listened to.

You are not a pussy. You are a human being with emotions. And now you are ¨blinded by the light of his memory. Blessings!
