The Mighty Quinn
Manfred Mann Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

Everybody's building ships and boats
Some are building monuments
Others jotting down notes
Everybody's in despair
Every girl and boy
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here
Everybody's gonna jump for joy

Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

I like to go just like the rest, I like my sugar sweet
But jumping queues and making haste
Just ain't my cup of meat
Everyone's beneath the trees feeding pigeons on a limb
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here
All the pigeons gonna run to him

Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

Let me do what I wanna do, I can't decide 'em all
Just tell me where to put 'em and I'll tell you who to call
Nobody can get no sleep, there's someone on everyone's toes
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here, everybody's gonna wanna doze

Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

Overall Meaning

The Mighty Quinn by Manfred Mann is a song that tells the story of a person who is revered and celebrated by everyone. The song begins with an invitation to everyone: “Come all without, come all within.” The person being celebrated is Quinn, also known as “Quinn the Eskimo,” and he is described as someone who is unlike anyone else, “You’ll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn.” The song goes on to describe how everyone is busy doing different things - building ships and boats, building monuments, jotting down notes, and being in despair. But when Quinn arrives, everybody is going to jump for joy.

The song then shifts to a more personal tone as the singer describes himself. He is someone who likes to go with the flow, but he doesn’t like jumping queues and making haste just to get ahead. The singer then observes that everyone is busy feeding pigeons, but when Quinn arrives, all the pigeons are going to run to him. The song ends with the singer requesting some autonomy and asking to be told where to put things, and he’ll tell you who to call. Finally, he says that nobody can get any sleep, but when Quinn gets there, everybody’s going to want to doze off.

I was only ten when this song was first out. I still love it forty-six years later. 1968, just like the rest of the 60's, had the best music ever! Give me this instead of all the junk that's out today. Thank God I'm not a 21st Century kid!
