While in her last year at school, Claire Johnston joined Mango Groove (founded in 1984 by John Leyden, who teamed up with Andy Craggs and ‘Big Voice Jack’ Lerole’). She quickly established herself as the face and voice of Mango Groove.
For the next two decades, they had an enormous impact on the South African music scene. At the time, popular multiracial music groups were not common in South Africa and Mango Groove was seen as a symbol of unity in a country struggling to shake itself free of apartheid.
Their unique blend of marabi, kwela and pop music, together with the voice and presence of Claire Johnston and the penny whistle of Mduduzi Magwaza, made them very popular.
Some of the highlights of Mango Groove’s career include:
* The direct satellite link-up to the The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in London in 1992 to an estimated audience of a billion people.
* Their performance in front of 200,000 people at a "Rock Against Racism" concert in Paris
* Their performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival where they received 3 encores.

Tell me so, tell me so
(I've been hoping ____)
Tell me so, tell me so
I've been wanting to know
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts become one
Two hearts
Two hearts
(I've been dreaming about you)
Tell me so, tell me so
I've been needing to know
(I've felt so lonely without you)
Tell me so, tell me so
I've been needing to know
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts become one
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts become one
Two hearts
Two hearts
???
I'm in love
Two hearts
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts become one
Two hearts beat as one
(Two hearts)
Two hearts become one
Two hearts
You are mine
Two hearts
Forever in time
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts become one
Two hearts
Two hearts
???
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts become one
The lyrics of Mango Groove's "Two Hearts" express a strong desire for the truth in a romantic relationship. The singer seeks assurance from their partner that they love and need them just as much as the singer loves and needs them. The repeated phrase "Tell me so, tell me so" emphasizes the need for open communication and honesty between partners. The core message of the song is that two hearts can become a singular entity when they beat as one. The entire song revolves around this idea, highlighting the importance of a deep emotional connection within a relationship.
The chorus of the song is a simple but powerful repetition of the phrase "Two hearts beat as one, two hearts become one." The second repetition changes the order to emphasize the idea of unity, taking the phrase "Two hearts become one" and placing it before "Two hearts beat as one." This reinforces the idea that when two hearts are in sync, they become one entity. The song continues with a repetition of the phrase "Two hearts" and various phrases that express the singer's love and commitment to their partner.
Overall, "Two Hearts" is a heartfelt tribute to the power of love and the importance of emotional connection in a relationship. It emphasizes the necessity of open communication and honesty between partners and the transformative power of love when two hearts beat as one.
