Good King Wenceslas
Manhattan Transfer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gath'ring winter fuel

"Hither, page, and stand by me
If thou know'st it, telling
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence
Underneath the mountain
Right against the forest fence
By Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me flesh and bring me wine
Bring me pine logs hither
Thou and I will see him dine
When we bear him thither."
Page and monarch forth they went
Forth they went together
Through the rude wind's wild lament
And the bitter weather

"Sire, the night is darker now
And the wind blows stronger
Fails my heart, I know not how,
I can go no longer."
"Mark my footsteps, my good page
Tread thou in them boldly
Thou shalt find the winter's rage
Freeze thy blood less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod
Where the snow lay dinted
Heat was in the very sod
Which the Saint had printed
Therefore, Christian men, be sure
Wealth or rank possessing

Ye who now will bless the poor
Shall yourselves find blessing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Good King Wenceslas tell a story of a king who looks out on the feast of Stephen and sees a poor man gathering winter fuel. He asks his page to join him to visit the man and bring him some food, wine and wood for his fire. The two set out together, and as they venture out, the page begins to falter in the cold and dark night. But the king reminds him to follow in his footsteps, which had previously been heated by the passing of St. Agnes. The king and page eventually reach the poor man, and the king bestows upon him the gifts they had brought, bringing light and warmth to his otherwise dark and bitter night.

The song is known for its uplifting melody, which perfectly captures the holiday spirit. It's a classic Christmas carol that has inspired countless adaptations and performances. However, the lyrics are also remarkable because they are based on a true story about Saint Wenceslas the Duke of Bohemia, who is celebrated as a national hero in the Czech Republic. The song was published in the nineteenth century and became an instant hit in England and abroad. It has since been translated into many languages and is still widely sung to this day.
