Bag Lady
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am not dead
I demand I know my rights
I know my rights
You cover illness with flowers
And flowers die
And flowers die

Walk in half view
Of all mirrors
It makes sense to me
Makes sense to me
Never let yourself out
I did, it ruined me
It ruined me

To be morally good
Only rather to love
A devil pretending to be a god
Laws written on paper and paper burns
Eternity is not sunrise

Walk in half view
Of all mirrors
It makes sense to me
Makes sense to me
Never let yourself out
I did, it ruined me
It ruined me

To be morally good
Only rather to love
A devil pretending to be a god
Laws written on paper and paper burns
Eternity is not a sunrise

To be morally good
Only rather to love
A devil pretending to be a god

Laws written on paper and paper burns
Eternity is not a sunrise

Overall Meaning

Bag Lady by Manic Street Preachers is a song about individuality and the pursuit of happiness. The first stanza could relate to someone who refuses to be oppressed or silenced, asserting their rights to exist and be heard. The image of covering illness with flowers could represent society's tendency to dismiss or gloss over issues that are difficult to confront, choosing instead to hide behind superficial gestures. The repetition of "and flowers die" could suggest that ignoring problems will only lead to their eventual decay and decay of society.

The next stanza speaks to the idea of self-perception and the danger of seeing oneself only as a reflection of others: "walk in half view of all mirrors." This can easily lead to a loss of identity and a feeling of being lost or unfulfilled. The final lines suggest that the singer has tried to break free, but has been "ruined" by the attempt to find individuality.

The final stanza continues to explore the idea of morality and what it means to be "good." The line "only rather to love" suggests that love should be the ultimate goal, rather than adherence to strict moral codes. The image of a devil pretending to be a god could represent the danger of blindly following authority or dogma. The lines "laws written on paper and paper burns, eternity is not a sunrise" again suggest that societal constructs are ultimately meaningless and temporary.

Overall, the song speaks to the struggle for self-expression and identity in a world that often values conformity over individuality, and suggests that true happiness can only come from breaking free of societal norms and pursuing that which makes us unique.

I've always loved the way the album officially closes with William's Last Words, which reads like a suicide note, only for the hidden track to kick in with the words 'I am not dead'

This is easily the highlight of the album for me. So Manic's like to put it out as a hidden track

the genius

It's chilling, this song. I know Richie's lyrics throughout their career often detail the various troubles he had with many things, but this seems to me, to be the only set he wrote that sums up his entire dilemma into one final admission of bitter resignation. The darkest thing they ever wrote in my view

Beautiful summation

Northern Stompboxes

Love this. Nails that Holy Bible guitar tone. Proper scratchy and abrasive. Tension in the chords.
This could have been put onto the third album and would have fit perfectly

For me I think this is actually the best song on the album, why didn't it make it onto the official tracklisting..?

This band have ment so much to me since 91, not onlky do i love thier music, when you read the lyrics and quotes on the album covers you then get interested in where they came from. The Manic Street Preachers taught me more thasn i ever learned in school,m if only school could have been dare i say sexy so learning was a buzz rather than a bore, sittin daydreaming, staring into space out the window, watching the time buy on the clock, the teacher droning on, the teacher from peanuts. MSP 4EVER
