Everlasting
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The gap that grows between our lives
The gap our parents never had
Stop those thoughts control your mind
Replace the things that you despise
Oh you're old I hear you say
It doesn't mean that I don't care
I don't believe in it anymore
Pathetic acts for a worthless cause

In the beginning when we were winning when our smiles were genuine
In the beginning when we were winning when our smiles were genuine
But now unforgiven the everlasting everlasting

The world is full of refugees
They're just like you and just like me
But as people we have a choice
To end the void with all its force
So don't forget or don't pretend
It's all the same now in the end
It was set in a different life
Destroys my days and haunts my nights

In the beginning when we were winning when our smiles were genuine
In the beginning when we were winning when our smiles were genuine
But now unforgiven the everlasting everlasting

In the beginning when we were winning when our smiles were genuine
In the beginning when we were winning when our smiles were genuine

But now unforgiven the everlasting everlasting
But now unforgiven the everlasting everlasting

Overall Meaning

"The Everlasting" by Manic Street Preachers is a deeply introspective examination of the divide that grows between people's lives as they age, and the gap between the lives of parents and their children. The song urges listeners to take control of their thoughts and emotions, to replace the things they despise in their lives with positivity, and to recognize that age doesn't mean a lack of care. The lyrics acknowledge the hurt and pain that comes with life's struggles, but emphasizes the importance of perseverance and choosing to end the void in one's life.

The repeated refrain "In the beginning when we were winning when our smiles were genuine" suggests a sense of nostalgia and longing for the past, when things were simpler and easier. However, the use of the word "winning" suggests a sense of competition and reminds the listener that life is not always easy. The chorus also mentions the idea of "the everlasting," suggesting something that is never-ending and inescapable.

Through the poignant metaphor of refugees, the lyrics make a political statement about the choices we have as people, to end the void and help those in need. The closing lines, "It was set in a different life/Destroys my days and haunts my nights," highlight the fact that our past experiences can have a profound impact on our present lives and mental health.

Overall, "The Everlasting" is a song that speaks to universal themes of struggle, loss, and perseverance through the lens of a deeply personal, introspective examination of the human experience.
