Futurology
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Defenders of the faith
With cruel hearts they make
You scarred and insecure
Scared to say a word
We've all fallen prey
To keep the wolves at bay

We'll come back one day
We never really went away
Went away

One day we will return
No matter how much it hurts
And it hurts

We've all killed some ants
All had broken plans
All failed ourselves
We've done the best we can
A magnifying glass
With questions left to ask

We'll come back one day
We never really went away
Went away

One day we will return
No matter how much it hurts
And it hurts

We'll come back one day
We never really went away
Went away

One day we will return

No matter how much it hurts
And it hurts

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Manic Street Preachers' song "Futurology" explore the idea of defending one’s beliefs against those who would try to undermine them, with the titular "defenders of the faith" being a reference to those who stand up to protect their own beliefs, often in the face of opposition. The song suggests that these defenders of the faith can be cruel and harsh, forcing others to feel scared and unsure about speaking their minds. However, the song also emphasizes the idea that we have all experienced this type of oppression before, and that we must all fight to keep the wolves at bay.

The refrain of "Futurology," "We'll come back one day, we never really went away," emphasizes the idea that despite the difficulties and setbacks that come with defending one's beliefs, people will always return to the ideas that have given them meaning and purpose. The song acknowledges that we have all made mistakes and failed in some way, but that we should not be discouraged; instead, we should use our past experiences to better understand the world and the people in it.

Overall, "Futurology" is a song that encourages listeners to stay strong in their beliefs and to never give up, no matter how hard things get. It suggests that we should remain committed to our ideals, despite any opposition we might encounter, and work towards a better future for ourselves and those around us.

I think that this track from the Manic Preachers is their best so far ! For me it hits all the right places about the fragility & strength of humanity ! Love, peace & war .The dilemma of misunderstanding life today in 2016 & attempting to make sense of banal events & situation projected onto & into our brains from miscommunication & false messages. The battles ,the struggle to survive & the desire to go to another place . Yep ,I'll give 5 out of 5 !
